Job Title: Engineering Technician – Certification & Compliance TestingJob Description
This entry to mid-level Engineering Technician role supports certification and compliance testing activities at a technical facility in Superior Township. You will work hands-on with test vehicles, emissions systems, and test equipment to ensure vehicles meet regulatory requirements. The position combines vehicle inspection and repair, emissions-related component work, test instrumentation, and data and asset tracking in both laboratory and shop environments.
Responsibilities
Perform detailed vehicle inspections to support certification, compliance, and audit activities.
Conduct routine vehicle maintenance and minor vehicle repairs to keep test vehicles in safe, reliable condition.
Remove and replace emissions-related components as part of certification and compliance test preparation.
Install, set up, and verify test vehicle instrumentation for chassis dynamometer and other emissions tests.
Drive vehicles for chassis dynamometer testing and coast-down testing in accordance with defined procedures.
Carry out minor fabrication tasks to support test setups, fixtures, and vehicle modifications.
Prepare vehicles for emissions laboratory testing, including inspection, instrumentation, and verification of readiness.
Maintain and update the in-use verification program (IUVP) loaner fleet, ensuring vehicles are prepared, tracked, and available as needed.
Prepare vehicles for shipping to test locations and coordinate logistics for shipment.
Support test trips, including vehicle preparation, on-site assistance, and basic troubleshooting.
Assist with coast-down (C/D) audits, high altitude testing, and other specialized test programs as required.
Support certification projects by delivering vehicles to regulatory agencies such as the EPA when needed.
Clean and wash vehicles to maintain professional appearance and readiness for testing and shipment.
Fuel vehicles and ensure they are properly prepared for laboratory and field testing.
Maintain the vehicle tracking database, ensuring all vehicle status, location, and usage records are accurate and current.
Maintain the fixed asset tracking database, keeping precise records of test equipment and assets.
Work safely in laboratory and shop environments, following all safety procedures and using required personal protective equipment.
Collaborate with engineers and other technicians to troubleshoot issues and improve test setups and processes.
Use hand and power tools safely to perform repairs, maintenance, and fabrication tasks.
Essential Skills
At least 3 years of hands-on basic automotive experience, including routine technician tasks such as inspections, maintenance, and minor repairs.
Demonstrated ability to perform automotive repairs and routine maintenance on a variety of vehicles.
Experience working with emissions equipment and related vehicle systems.
Basic fabrication skills to perform minor fabrication work to support test setups and vehicle modifications.
Ability to work with test equipment, including setting up and using chassis dynamometers and other emissions test systems.
Valid ASE or state automotive technician certifications.
Ability to safely drive and operate vehicles for chassis dynamometer and coast-down testing.
Capability to maintain accurate databases for vehicle tracking and fixed asset tracking.
Strong awareness of safety practices in laboratory and shop environments, including working around fuel, compressed gases, and emissions systems.
Physical ability to bend, stoop, and lift required weights safely, and to work with hand and power tools.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Experience with hybrid and electric vehicles.
Previous experience in an automotive dealership environment is a plus.
Familiarity with emissions lab procedures and regulatory testing processes.
Comfort working with compressed air and gas systems, as well as exhaust and emissions equipment.
Attention to detail and strong organizational skills for tracking vehicles, equipment, and test assets.
Ability to work effectively in a team-oriented, project-based environment.
Willingness to support an open-ended contract role with the potential to convert to a direct position when headcount is approved.
Work Environment
You will work in both laboratory and shop environments on a first-shift schedule, typically from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The laboratory environment involves exposure to fuel, compressed air and gases, emissions and exhaust fumes, as well as potential pinching, tripping, electrical, and chemical hazards. Bending and stooping are required, and you may need to lift up to 50 pounds. The shop environment also includes exposure to fuel, compressed air and gases, emissions and exhaust fumes, and similar physical and safety hazards. In the shop, you must be able to lift up to 75 pounds and work safely with hand and power tools. A strong understanding of safety procedures is essential in both settings, and safety glasses are required as part of the standard attire. The role involves hands-on work with vehicles, test equipment, and fabrication tools in an active, technical setting that supports ongoing certification and compliance projects.

Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $18.00 - $25.00/hr.
