The Bilingual Phlebotomist provides expert support in blood collection and specimen preparation while ensuring patients feel comfortable and informed throughout the process. This role involves performing high-quality venipuncture and other specimen collections for a wide range of patients, accurately processing and storing specimens, and supporting administrative tasks to maintain excellent patient care and laboratory standards.
Responsibilities
Perform blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles with a focus on patient comfort and safety.
Collect and store blood, urine, fecal, and other specimens according to established procedures and protocols.
Clearly and courteously explain venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures to patients in a bilingual capacity, ensuring understanding and reducing anxiety.
Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes, ensuring accurate patient and test identification.
Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders and laboratory protocols.
Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against scripts or orders to ensure 100% accuracy before processing.
Package specimens correctly for transport, following all guidelines to maintain specimen integrity.
Store specimens at required temperatures and place samples in appropriate collection containers or tubes, following all procedures specific to each protocol.
Record maintenance data and decontamination activities in accordance with laboratory standards.
Update patient information accurately and maintain organized, detailed records.
Answer telephone calls and provide laboratory result information as appropriate to satisfy inquiries.
Understand and fully comply with OSHA and DEP regulations related to safety, handling, and disposal of specimens and materials.
Wear appropriate attire and personal protective equipment as required for safe specimen collection and processing.
Attend annual department trainings and stay current with relevant procedures, protocols, and regulations.
Demonstrate proper phlebotomy techniques for a diverse patient population, including pediatric patients when required.
Essential Skills
2–3 years of hands-on experience performing blood draws and phlebotomy procedures.
Proficiency in phlebotomy, including venipuncture using straight needles and butterfly needles.
Experience in labeling, centrifuging, splitting, freezing, and packaging specimens for transport.
Ability to collect and process a variety of specimen types, including blood, urine, and fecal samples.
Bilingual communication skills, with the ability to clearly explain procedures and provide information to patients in two languages.
Strong administrative skills and attention to detail when updating patient information and handling laboratory requisitions.
Ability to read and understand physicians’ orders and translate them into accurate specimen collection and processing actions.
Working knowledge of OSHA and DEP regulations and the ability to comply with all safety and regulatory requirements.
Capability to handle pediatric and adult patients with sensitivity and professionalism.
Competence in answering telephone inquiries and reading laboratory results accurately.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Demonstrated ability to work independently while traveling between locations within the state.
Strong organizational skills to manage multiple specimens, requisitions, and patient interactions efficiently.
Excellent interpersonal skills to put patients at ease and maintain a high standard of patient care.
Comfort working in a fast-paced clinical or laboratory environment.
Willingness to participate in ongoing training and departmental education.
Work Environment
This role offers in-state travel and is well suited for individuals who enjoy a change of scenery and working in different clinical settings. The typical schedule runs Wednesday (9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.), Thursday (9:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.), and Friday (9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.). The work environment involves clinical and laboratory areas where you handle blood and other specimens, operate centrifuges, and use standard phlebotomy and specimen processing equipment. You will follow established safety protocols, including the use of appropriate attire and personal protective equipment. The position does not require working on holidays or during vacation periods as described. Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $22.00/hr.
