Town of Wytheville Job Opening Job Title: Public Utility Heavy Equipment Operator ANTICIPATED STARTING SALARY: $35,250 to $46,172 Actual compensation will be DOE/DOQ. DEPARTMENT: Public Utilities FLSA DESIGNATION: Non-exempt POSTED: 03/24/2026 POSITION SUMMARY: The Public Utility Heavy Equipment Operator (HEO) for the Town of Wytheville is responsible for the operation of medium to large size equipment frequently used for the construction, maintenance, operation, repair and replacement of Town owned and operated infrastructures related to the distribution of municipal drinking water and collection of sanitary sewage within Town limits and Town owned and operated systems extending into Wythe County. Works under the close supervision of the Public Utility Crew Leader assigned to the Operator or the Public Utility Supervisor in the absence of the assigned Crew Leader. ENTRY LEVEL REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: High school diploma or GED equivalent. At least forty-eight (48) months of experience with medium to large size equipment and experience directly to a construction career. Considerable knowledge of heavy-equipment operating principles. Considerable knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions common to heavy equipment operations State drivers license which is valid and always maintained in good standing. State CDL drivers license which is valid and always maintained in good standing or ability to acquire a State CDL in under a twelve (12) month period. POSITION DESCRIPTION Class Title: Public Utility Heavy Equipment Operator (HEO) Department: Water/Sewer Maintenance and Construction Worker's Comp Group No.: 054 Date: October 23, 2024 GENERAL PURPOSE Public Utility Heavy Equipment Operators (HEO) are responsible for the operation of medium to large size equipment frequently used for the construction, maintenance, operation, repair and replacement of Town owned and operated infrastructures related to the distribution of municipal drinking water and collection of sanitary sewage within Town limits and Town owned and operated systems extending into Wythe County. SUPERVISION RECEIVED Works under the close supervision of the Public Utility Crew Leader assigned to the Operator or the Public Utility Supervisor in the absence of the assigned Crew Leader. None. I ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES The essential duties and responsibilities may include any of the following tasks, knowledge, skills or other characteristics. The list that follows is not intended as a comprehensive list; it is intended to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities of incumbent(s) designated as a Public Utility Heavy Equipment Operator (HEO). - Ensure the proper maintenance of equipment and tools by cleaning and checking equipment and tools after use. - Drives trucks of sizes and weights which could exceed 10,000 lbs. - Assists in the loading, hauling and unloading and transporting of various equipment, and material. - Performs routine inspections and preventive maintenance on assigned equipment and refers defects o needed repairs to assigned crew leader or supervisor. - Operates a variety of light to medium size powered and non-powered tools and equipment necessary to perform assigned duties. - Operates a variety of medium to large size powered tools and equipment necessary to perform assigned duties. Assist in maintaining accurate database of available stocked materials necessary for the construction, maintenance, operation, repair and replacement of Town owned and operated infrastructures.

  • Complete required training and certifications provided by the Town related to safety and skills required to perform assigned duties.
  • Assist with traffic control while on work sites as assigned.
  • Performs assigned duties in conformance with appropriate safety and security standards.
  • May lead others by giving instructions, providing training, and guiding others to facilitate task accomplishment.
  • Functions as part of a team and clearly communicate to other members of the team when performing labor involved in the construction, maintenance, operation, repair and replacement of Town owned and operated water and sanitary sewer infrastructure, including but not limited to: Pavement cutting . Sanitary sewer structure and line clearing, flushing and repair. Water main and service lateral pipe repair. Installation of new sanitary sewer connections, service laterals, cleanouts and associated fittings and Installation of new water service connections, taps, meters assemblies, meter pits and associated fittings. Installation of new structures, pipe and associated fittings for sanitary sewer main extensions and Installation of new structures, pipe and associated fittings for water distribution main extensions. Operation of infrastructure associated with water distribution systems including valves, hydrants, pumps and water metering devices. Other tasks and duties as assigned by Public Utility Crew Leader or by the Public Utilities Supervisor to the Operator. PREFERRED AND REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Preferred minimum qualifications:
  • At least twenty-four (24) months of experience directly related to water distribution and sanitary sewer construction, maintenance, operation, repair and replacement. Prior ability to operate tools and equipment necessary to perform duties Required minimum qualifications: High school diploma or GED equivalent. At least forty-eight (48) months of experience with medium to large size equipment and experience directly to a construction career. Considerable knowledge of heavy-equipment operating principles. Considerable knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions common to heavy equipment operations State driver's license which is valid and always maintained in good standing.
