This position will work in Caterpillar China (Wuxi) R&D Center electrification & energy solution team, the Electric Drive Powertrain System Specialist is responsible for the design, integration, validation, and optimization of electric drive systems, including battery, e-motors, inverters, gearboxes, and high-voltage components. This role leads cross-functional technical development and ensures system performance, efficiency, safety, and regulatory compliance for hybrid and battery electric vehicle platforms.

Key Responsibilities

  1. System Architecture & Design

• Develop electric drive powertrain system architecture, battery electric and Hybrid, including battery/motor/inverter/generator/gearbox interfaces, HV/LV power distribution,

• Define system-level requirements, specifications, and performance targets.

• Lead component selection and sizing (battery, motors, inverters, gear box).

  1. Technical Integration

• Oversee integration of electric drive systems into vehicle platforms, ensuring mechanical, electrical, and software compatibility.

• Collaborate with propulsion software, controls, thermal, NVH, and calibration teams.

• Conduct system-level DFMEA, PFMEA, and safety analyses.

  1. Testing, Validation & Optimization

• Develop test plans for bench, dyno, and vehicle-level validation.

• Analyze performance data to improve efficiency, torque delivery, NVH, thermal stability, and durability.

• Resolve system-level technical issues during development and production.

  1. Cross Functional Collaboration

• Work closely with mechanical, electrical, software, manufacturing, and supply chain teams.

• Manage technical communication with components team (battery, motor, inverter, gearbox, power electronics, charger).

• Support sourcing decisions and technical negotiations.

  1. Compliance & Standards

• Ensure systems meet regulatory and functional safety requirements (ISO 26262, IEC, UN R standards).

• Support homologation documentation and certification activities.

  1. Continuous Improvement

• Identify and implement improvements in system architecture, performance, scalability, and cost.

• Keep current with emerging electric mobility technologies and industry best practices.


Required Qualifications

Education

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, Mechatronics, or related field.

Technical Skills

• Strong understanding of electric powertrain system architectures including battery electric and hybrid electric system

• Knowledge of the performance of electric powertrain system performance

• Knowledge of high voltage systems (300–1000V), battery, motor, power electronics and transmission

• Familiarity with vehicle integration principles

• Hands-on experience with testing (dyno, NVH, thermal, durability).

Professional Experience

• 5+ years of experience in electric powertrain development preferred.

• Prior work with OEMs or Tier 1 suppliers is an advantage.

Soft Skills

• Strong analytical and problem-solving mindset.

• Excellent communication and cross functional collaboration abilities.

• Able to work in fast-paced, innovation-driven environments.


Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with functional safety (ISO 26262) or system safety analysis.

• Knowledge of thermal management systems for e-powertrain.

• Experience in hybrid architectures or off high way powertrain system

• Familiarity with Agile development processes.
