Position Summary

The Senior Manager, Software Development Engineering leads a .NET and SQL-focused engineering team (12–15 colleagues), emphasizing operational excellence, root cause analysis, and continuous improvement for on-premise applications. This leader is responsible for application stability, performance, and the end user experience, modeling CVS Health’s core values and Heart At Work Behaviors™. The Senior Manager will drive technical and people leadership, foster a culture of ownership and collaboration, and serve as a key partner to senior business leaders, ensuring technology outcomes are aligned with business needs and customer value. The Senior Manager will champion the use of modern tools, including emerging AI technologies, to accelerate operational problem-solving and enhance documentation and knowledge transfer for legacy applications.

Key Responsibilities

  • Leadership & Team Development

  • Lead, coach, and develop a high-performing engineering team focused on .NET and SQL applications.

  • Drive performance management, career development, and succession planning in alignment with CVS Health’s Heart At Work Behaviors™ and Values.

  • Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, continuous learning, and psychological safety.

  • Coordinate work across multiple streams, balancing operational excellence and project delivery.

  • Operational Excellence & Root Cause Analysis

  • Own reliability, availability, and performance of critical on-premise applications, partnering closely with Operations.

  • Lead structured root cause analysis (RCA) for incidents and recurring issues; ensure durable corrective and preventive actions are implemented.

  • Establish and improve incident management processes (triage, escalation, communication, post-incident review) and ensure timely, transparent communication with senior stakeholders.

  • Maintain and refine operational runbooks, support documentation, and standard operating procedures.

  • Application Performance Monitoring & Tooling

  • Define and maintain application performance monitoring (APM) standards for .NET and SQL applications.

  • Select, implement, and optimize monitoring and logging tools, ensuring clear visibility into system health, performance, and user experience.

  • Use operational metrics and dashboards (response times, error rates, throughput, resource utilization) to proactively detect, resolve, and communicate issues.

  • Drive automation and tooling improvements to reduce manual work and accelerate response, focusing on on-premise environments.

  • AI Tooling for Operations and Knowledge Management

  • Evaluate and deploy AI-based tools to streamline incident triage, automate analysis of operational data, and accelerate root cause identification and resolution.

  • Leverage AI solutions to assist in reverse engineering legacy .NET/SQL applications, improving documentation quality and supporting effective knowledge transfer across the team.

  • Partner with engineering and operations leaders to pilot and adopt innovative tools that drive operational efficiency and reduce manual effort, ensuring solutions are effective in on-premise environments.

  • Delivery & Engineering Practices

  • Oversee planning and execution of enhancements, defect remediation, and operational workstreams.

  • Ensure team follows robust engineering practices (design/code reviews, testing, structured releases) tailored for on-premise systems.

  • Collaborate with product, operations, and business partners to refine requirements, clarify priorities, and translate needs into actionable backlogs.

  • Remove impediments and coordinate dependencies across technology and operations groups.

  • Stakeholder Management, Communication, and End User Focus

  • Serve as a primary technology contact for senior business leaders; provide clear, proactive communication on priorities, status, risks, and trade-offs.

  • Advocate for the end user experience in all technical and operational decisions.

  • Translate technical topics and incidents into business language, supporting trust and transparency.

  • Use operational and business metrics to demonstrate value delivered and guide prioritization.

  • Strategy, Planning, and Governance

  • Provide input into area strategy, roadmap, and budget planning, especially regarding operational resilience and continuous improvement.

  • Contribute to organization/talent strategy, ensuring the right mix of skills to support delivery and operations.

  • Champion continuous improvement initiatives to reduce incidents, improve performance, and streamline support.

Required Qualifications

  • 5+ years of progressive software engineering experience, including .NET and SQL application development/support.

  • 3+ years people management experience leading software engineering teams or comparable technical leadership.

  • Strong experience with .NET (C#) development, architecture, and operational support.

  • Deep proficiency with SQL (e.g., SQL Server): schema design, performance tuning, complex query optimization.

  • Hands-on experience with APM, logging, and diagnostics tools for on-premise environments.

  • Proven success leading teams responsible for production operations, reliability, and support.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead structured RCA and implement sustainable corrective actions.

  • Experience defining and tracking operational metrics (incident rates, MTTR, SLAs) to drive improvement.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills for technical and business audiences (including senior leadership).

  • Strong focus on end user experience; ability to balance technical trade-offs with user impact and business value.

  • Ability to influence, negotiate, and align priorities across technology, operations, and business stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in healthcare, insurance, or other highly regulated environments.

  • Experience leading or contributing to structured continuous improvement or operational excellence initiatives (Lean, Six Sigma, etc.).

  • Familiarity with modern engineering practices (automated testing, configuration management, scripting), including in on-premise contexts.

  • Experience evaluating, implementing, or leveraging AI-based tools to improve operational monitoring, incident analysis, or code/documentation generation in enterprise environments.

  • Demonstrated ability to drive innovation and process improvement in legacy/on-premise application environments using modern tools and technology.

Education

Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or corresponding experience

Pay Range

The typical pay range for this role is:

$106,605.00 - $260,590.00

This pay range represents the base hourly rate or base annual full-time salary for all positions in the job grade within which this position falls. The actual base salary offer will depend on a variety of factors including experience, education, geography and other relevant factors. This position is eligible for a CVS Health bonus, commission or short-term incentive program in addition to the base pay range listed above. This position also includes an award target in the company’s equity award program.
