Job Description
The Biotherapeutics and Genetic Medicine Department at AbbVie, Worcester, MA is seeking a highly motivated engineer to join a dynamic team supporting biologics drug discovery and biologics engineering. We are hiring for the High Throughput Biotherapeutics Production team that supports the delivery of recombinant therapeutic proteins and the development of automated solutions for biologics. In this role, you will make an impact to drug discovery through technology innovation and custom engineering.
For this posting, we are seeking a talented engineer with a strong mechanical and electrical engineering background. As part of this role, you will help us build our automated data generation capabilities for AI/ML platforms. This function will entail programming of robotic integration, liquid handling methods and data processing scripts. Additionally, we will push the cutting edge of automation with custom device prototyping. The ideal candidate should have strong experience in lab instrument automation, CAD design and scripting to accelerate and streamline antibody production and characterization workflows.
Qualifications
Educational Background:
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Computer Science, or a closely related discipline, with typically 5 years (BS) or typically 2 years (MS) of experience in the pharmaceutical industry or a relevant technical field.
Skills and Experiences:
Proficiency in hardware and software operation and maintenance of liquid handlers (Hamilton, Lynx, Tecan) and robot arms.
Strong expertise with programming for instrument and data capture (Python, C#, Arduino).
Expert knowledge in custom design and production of components/labware to support protein production automation. Familiar with CAD design software (Onshape, Solidworks). Hands-on experience in 3D printers (Bambu, Prusa, Formlab, etc.).
Experience in integration of actuators and sensors for lab instruments using microcontrollers is highly valued.
Knowledge of general biologics production is preferred.
Keen ability to initiate the automation discussion and collaborate across the broad BGM department.
Excellent communication skills and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
