Saint-Gobain Application Engineering Intern in WORCESTER, Massachusetts
This summer internship supports Super Abrasives Operations through a hands‑on grinding optimization project in Finishing . The intern will apply application engineering principles to improve asset utilization, grinding efficiency, and work wheel performance , helping reduce production costs and improve throughput. The role offers real‑world exposure to manufacturing process optimization, experimental testing, and data‑driven decision‑making.
Essential Functions
Design and execute controlled grinding tests on finishing equipment
Collect, organize, and analyze test data related to:
Grinding rates and cycle times
Wheel performance and wear
Machine settings and utilization
Compare alternative wheel specifications and process parameters
Develop clear, actionable recommendations for process improvements
Communicate findings to SA Operations stakeholders through written summaries and presentations
Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Must be currently enrolled in a two or four-year accredited degree program, preferably in Mechanical, Industrial or other Engineering program, or related field.
Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills
Comfort working in a manufacturing or production environment
Ability to collect, analyze, and interpret experimental or test data
Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and basic data analysis tools
Preferred: Coursework or experience related to manufacturing processes, materials, or machining
Preferred: Familiarity with grinding, finishing, or abrasive processes (academic or project‑based experience acceptable)
Preferred: Interest in process optimization, continuous improvement, or application engineering

The internship provides professional development opportunities and valuable applied learning in a manufacturing production setting. - The individual will work under the direction the Super Abrasives Plant Manager. -
This is an opportunity for an intern to get exposure to various aspects that they have learned in the classroom with the real-life experiences of activities at Saint-Gobain Bonded & Super Abrasives. -This internship will also provide:
• - -Hands on experience with process optimization in a real manufacturing environment-

• - -Practical experience translating test data into cost saving and efficiency driven recommendations-
• - -Collaboration with operations and engineering professionals
