RECRUITMENT: The State Highway Administration’s (SHA) District 1 is recruiting for a Heavy Equipment Maintenance Technician I position in Worcester County. This position is open to anyone who meets the minimum qualifications listed below.

Nature of Work: The Heavy Equipment Maintenance Technician I will work on motor vehicles, diesel powered equipment and/or construction/maintenance equipment. Employees receive moderate supervision from a Heavy Equipment Maintenance Supervisor or other designated supervisor. Employees in this class are considered essential employees and are subject to call 24 hours a day, as may be required to maintain continuous operation of a facility. Employees may be required to work rotating shifts including evenings, nights, weekends and holidays. In the event of hazardous weather or highway conditions, employees will be called to duty during off-hours to maintain and repair equipment. Employees are required to work outdoors in all types of weather and may be exposed to extreme heat, fumes, exhaust and hazardous materials. On some assignments, employees may be required to move objects weighing over 50 pounds. Employees in this classification do not supervise.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: Graduation from a standard high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: One and a half (1.5) years of experience servicing, maintaining and repairing motor vehicles, gasoline and/or diesel engines, or heavy-duty construction equipment.

Notes:

  1. Applicants may substitute documented and relevant experience repairing, servicing and maintaining automobiles, trucks, buses or comparable equipment on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

  2. Completion of an accredited training program for Heavy Equipment or Diesel Repair may be substituted for one and one-half years of the experience. The accrediting body for the training program must be listed on the U.S. Department of Education's Database of Accredited Postsecondary Institutions and Programs.

  3. U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as described under the Minimum Qualifications may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

  4. Certification as a Technician by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) can be substituted for two years of the required education. (The two years of experience used to qualify for ASE testing is considered an integral part of this substitution and cannot also be considered separately to meet Education Minimum Qualifications.)

  5. Certification as a Master Technician by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) can be substituted for the required education.

Licenses & Certifications

Candidate must possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.

Special Requirements:

  • This position is considered an essential employee and is subject to all 24 hours a day, 7 days/week for inclement weather and/or other emergency events.

  • Must be reachable and respond to calls after work hours.
