Job Description
The Medical Assistant supports providers in a primary care clinic by performing both clinical and administrative duties to ensure patients receive efficient, compassionate, and high-quality care. This role helps patients feel at ease, clearly explains provider instructions, and plays a key part in maintaining organized, well-prepared exam rooms and accurate medical records.
Responsibilities
Escort patients to exam rooms and promptly notify the provider when patients are ready to be seen.
Ensure all laboratory and diagnostic test results are available in the patient chart prior to the appointment.
Maintain exam rooms by keeping them appropriately stocked, clean, and prepared for patient visits.
Perform initial patient intake, including confirming the reason for visit and symptoms, and obtaining vital signs such as weight, height, blood pressure, and temperature.
Verify and update current medications, contact information, and medical allergies in the medical record.
Prepare patients for examinations by helping them understand procedures and ensuring they are comfortable.
Assist providers during patient examinations and procedures as needed.
Collect and prepare laboratory specimens according to established protocols.
Provide patients with clear instructions regarding medications, special diets, and follow-up care as directed by the provider.
Transmit prescription refills as directed by the provider using electronic systems.
Perform phlebotomy as needed, in coordination with clinic processes and lab partners.
Monitor inventory levels and order medical, laboratory, and office supplies to ensure continuous availability.
Follow up on diagnostic tests, medications, and blood work, and help communicate results to patients as directed.
Provide basic wound care within the scope of practice and under provider direction.
Use computer applications, including electronic medical records (EMR) and Microsoft Office, to document and manage patient information.
Update, organize, and file patient medical records accurately and in a timely manner.
Utilize knowledge of applicable medical codes and HEDIS measures to support quality care and documentation.
Manage patient portal requests, refill requests, lab result notifications, and chart preparation during dedicated administrative time.
Follow written and verbal directions and adhere to established clinical and administrative protocols.
Prioritize tasks and manage time effectively in a high-paced clinical environment while meeting deadlines.
Essential Skills
At least two years of clinical experience working as a medical assistant in a clinic setting.
High school diploma or equivalent (GED or HS diploma).
Medical Assistant certification or higher-level clinical credential such as EMT, RN, or LPN.
Proficiency with electronic medical record (EMR) systems, including experience with Athena and Epic or similar platforms.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
Strong knowledge of medical terminology, geriatrics, and internal medicine workflows.
Ability to perform phlebotomy and collect laboratory specimens safely and accurately.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills for interacting with patients, providers, and colleagues.
Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills with a focus on patient care.
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail in managing records, supplies, and tasks.
Effective time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines in a busy clinical setting.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to address patient and workflow needs.
Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and adapt to changing clinical demands.
Ability to function well in a high-paced and at times stressful environment.
Knowledge of HEDIS and applicable medical codes.
Ability to follow directions given verbally, in writing, or through posted protocols.
Ability to stand for prolonged periods and frequently walk, sit, use hands and fingers, stoop, kneel, and crouch.
Ability to speak and hear clearly in English.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
CPR and First Aid certification preferred.
Experience using electronic health record (EHR) systems and patient portals.
Experience providing patient education on medications, special diets, and chronic disease management.
Familiarity with caring for Medicare and geriatric populations in a primary care setting.
Secondary language skills are a plus.
Ability to work collaboratively with multiple providers and medical assistants in a team-based care model.
Interest in professional growth with potential progression into a Clinical Lead role managing medical assistants or into an office management position.
Work Environment
This role is based in a primary care clinic located within a larger medical facility in Woodstock. The Medical Assistant supports up to two providers at a time, within a team of up to four medical assistants, in a setting described as calm, pleasant, and highly positive. The clinic follows a typical back-office clinical workflow, with a dedicated phlebotomist on site to perform blood draws. This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Woodstock, GA.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $21.00/hr.
