Aerotek Welder in Wood Dale, Illinois

Welder (TIG/MIG – Job Shop / High-Variety Production)

Job Description

This role is for a skilled TIG/MIG Welder in a high-production job shop environment, working on a wide variety of non-repetitive projects. You will set up your own jobs and equipment, interpret blueprints and welding symbols, and complete welds and fabrications from start to finish on a broad range of metals and gauges. There are multiple openings, including a Lead Welder opportunity focused on job organization and training other welders.

Responsibilities

  • Weld parts, components, frames, and weldments according to drawings and specifications.

  • Set up welding jobs independently, including machine setup, fixtures, and material preparation, with minimal repetitive work.

  • Operate TIG and MIG welding equipment, as well as arc or gas welding equipment with atmospheric control for complex hand welding operations.

  • Read and interpret engineering drawings, including welding symbols, material types, material shapes, and imperial measurements, to determine proper setup and weld requirements.

  • Perform basic machining math, including fractional to decimal and feet to inches conversions, to ensure accurate fabrication.

  • Weld a broad range of metals and alloys, including aluminum, stainless steel, mild steel, cold rolled steel, and other steels, on complex precision assemblies with high strength and pressure requirements.

  • Position, align, and clamp components of fabricated metal products prior to welding to ensure accurate fit-up.

  • Set and regulate gas, current, voltage, and pressures to achieve proper penetration, fusion, and weld quality, including oxyacetylene welding operations.

  • Fuse dissimilar metals while maximizing weld strength and minimizing distortion.

  • Use measuring and inspection tools such as tape measures, calipers, machinist squares, protractors, and micrometers to verify accuracy.

  • Grind and polish sharp edges on workpieces as required to meet quality and safety standards.

  • Verify that weldments conform to drawings and specifications and make corrections or adjustments as needed.

  • Maintain a safe, clean, and organized work area and comply with all quality, safety, and work rules and regulations.

  • Meet and maintain both quality and quantity expectations for production output.

  • Continuously look for ways to improve work processes, welding techniques, and individual performance.

  • For the Lead Welder opening: collaborate with plant leadership on job organization, help coordinate work within the welding area, and train and develop welders to improve their skills and consistency.

Essential Skills

  • 2 or more years of TIG and MIG welding experience, or completion/attendance of a technical or trade school welding program.

  • Strong job shop and non-production welding experience, with the ability to handle varied and non-repetitive work.

  • Proficiency with TIG and MIG welding processes on aluminum, stainless steel, mild steel, steel, and cold rolled steel.

  • Ability to weld primarily 12 gauge through 16 gauge materials and work confidently with smaller components.

  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, weld symbols, and related technical information to determine proper job setup.

  • Capability to weld in various positions, including primarily bench work with flexibility to move as job requirements change.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience working in a high-production job shop environment with limited repetitive work is highly beneficial.

  • Background in fabricating and welding complex precision assemblies with high strength and pressure requirements.

  • Experience welding dissimilar metals while controlling distortion and maintaining weld integrity.

  • Familiarity with using Lincoln and similar welding machines.

  • Strong attention to detail and craftsmanship in grinding, finishing, and polishing welds and edges.

  • Willingness to mentor and support other welders; prior leadership or training experience is a plus for the Lead Welder role.

  • Continuous improvement mindset with an interest in refining welding techniques and fabrication processes.
