EMPLOYMENT CLASSIFICATION:Exempt, Certified

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelors degree from regionally accredited college or university
  • Valid Arizona Teacher Certification in Special Education
  • Endorsement by the Arizona Department of Education in the appropriate area of disability for the position

OVERVIEW OF JOB DESCRIPTION:To work with the regular education teachers using the inclusion model for special education and create a flexible program and an environment favorable to learning and personal growth for special education students; to motivate each student to develop skills, knowledge, and attitudes in accordance with ability; to develop the students special talents; to develop sound opinions based on facts; and to develop proficiency in inquiry skills and concepts.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Follows local, state and federal law and adhere to State Department of Education and Local School Board Policy.
  2. Meets or exceeds the Arizona Professional Teacher Standards.
  3. Meets and instructs assigned classes in the locations and at the times designated with a primary function of insuring that the special education students are making progress toward their goals as indicated in their IEPs.
  4. Teaches skills, knowledge, and attitudes to special education students in cooperation with the regular education teachers on a grade level in the curriculum area of assignment, utilizing courses of study prescribed by the District Governing Board or other appropriate agencies.
  5. Provides individual and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of special education students with varying intellectual abilities, attitudes, and cultural backgrounds.
  6. Assists in classroom instruction whereby students may develop concepts and appreciation for the course of study, enhancing their ability to make qualified judgments.
  7. Develops instructional plans and organizes class time in cooperation with the regular education teacher to provide a balanced program of instruction, demonstration and work time.
  8. Develops students abilities for critical analysis and encourages independent thought and expression of original ideas.
  9. Monitors, evaluates and maintains an accurate written record of each students performance, growth skills and knowledge through IEPs and progress reports.
  10. Identifies student needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in helping students solve health, attitude, and learning problems.
  11. Assists the regular education teacher in maintaining standards of student behavior needed to provide an orderly and productive learning environment.
  12. Participates in curriculum planning and program development within the school of assignment, as well as on the district level.
  13. Confers, as needed, with parents to discuss the individual students progress and is responsible for writing the individualized lesson plans (IEPs) for students assigned through the district special education office.
  14. Selects and requisitions textbooks and instructional aids appropriate to the interest and maturity level of students.
  15. Follows the adopted district curriculum as used by the regular education teacher which is aligned with Arizona academic standards and state mandated testing. The curriculum will be adjusted or modified to accommodate the students IEP.
  16. Supervises as assigned, student activities both in and out of the classroom during the regular workday.
  17. Assists in implementing all policies and regulations concerning the administration of the school.
  18. Maintains professional competence through in-se vice education activities provided by the district, and/or in self-selected professional growth activities.
  19. Meets and confers with regular education teachers on Child Find Students to complete review of data and determine need for further evaluation.
  20. Meets with Multi-educational team (MET) to discuss possible eligibility and need for specialized services.
  21. Plans and supervises purposeful assignments for paraprofessionals, when appropriate.
  22. Attends faculty meetings, participates on faculty committees, and sponsors student activities when assigned.
  23. Prepares reports and maintains required inventory records.
  24. Performs other job relevant duties as assigned.

REPORTS TO:Principal

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:Work year to be established by the Board. Salary is determined by individual training and experience level on approved salary schedule.

EVALUATION:Performance of this position will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Boards policy on evaluation of personnel.
