What you’ll do:
Eaton’s four year Fitter Apprenticeship offers an exciting opportunity for enthusiastic, self motivated, and ambitious individuals to gain hands on experience across a range of engineering shop floor disciplines. You will work from engineering drawings and technical documentation to carry out assembly, installation, testing, and fault diagnosis, building strong practical skills from day one.
By the end of the programme, you will complete the Level 3 Advanced Manufacturing Technical Certificate and the mandatory End Point Assessment. Graduates of the scheme progress into permanent roles with the knowledge and capabilities needed to become fully qualified Mechanical Fitters, with opportunities for continued development.
Role Summary
As a Fitter Apprentice, you will follow a personalised development plan designed to support your learning across Operations. You will receive tailored technical training and undertake shop floor placements that provide practical exposure to mechanical and electrical systems within the aerospace industry, particularly Air to Air Refuelling and Actuation.
In your final year, you will complete a dedicated placement aligned to your strengths and interests, enabling you to build deeper expertise and prepare for your future role.
Throughout the apprenticeship, you will learn how to interpret Engineering drawings, follow procedures and safety requirements, and complete a range of fitting and assembly tasks. You will develop skills using hand tools, measuring equipment, inspection techniques, and electrical/electronic test methods. You will work both independently and as part of a supportive team, becoming confident in problem solving, quality ownership, and contributing to continuous improvement.
Programme Structure
Years 1 - 2
You will combine workplace learning with day release study at Bournemouth & Poole College to work towards the Level 3 Advanced Manufacturing (Development Knowledge) qualification. On site, you will complete rotational shop floor placements designed to broaden your understanding of the business and complement your college studies. Example placements include:
Actuation test facilities
Assembly, testing, and maintenance of air refuelling pods
Validating parts to meet aerospace standards
Year 3
You will be primarily based at Eaton in Wimborne, with one day per week at college to complete the final year of the Level 3 qualification. Rotations will last 3 - 4.5 months across a variety of Operations areas, helping you expand your knowledge and skills. Typical placements include:
UK Aerospace Additive Manufacturing Centre of Excellence
Manufacturing Engineering
Aftermarket repair services
Year 4
Your final year is spent full time on site in a year long placement within a team aligned to your demonstrated strengths and interests. During this period, you will continue to build your portfolio in preparation for the End Point Assessment, an independent evaluation confirming that you have achieved the required skills, knowledge, and behaviours. This final placement allows you to consolidate what you’ve learned and confidently transition into a full time career.
Qualifications:
To apply, you must have (or be predicted to achieve) a minimum of four GCSEs at grade 4/C or above including Maths and English. Alternatively, you may hold a Level 2 qualification in Engineering achieved at a pass grade or higher.
Skills:
You will be able to demonstrate a genuine interest in Engineering, supported by your hobbies and interests. Strong practical skills, attention to detail, and an enthusiasm for hands on learning are essential.
