Job Summary

A Swamper on a WUI Fuels Reduction Crew supports sawyers by maintaining safe cutting operations, managing slash and debris, and ensuring situational awareness in Wildland-Urban Interface environments. The swamper plays a critical safety role by identifying hazards, clearing escape routes, and assisting with fuels reduction activities near structures, roads, and infrastructure.


Key Responsibilities
  • Support sawyers during chainsaw operations by maintaining a safe work area.

  • Clear brush, limbs, and debris from around cutting sites.

  • Establish and maintain escape routes and safety zones.

  • Maintain visual and verbal contact with sawyers at all times during cutting.

  • Identify and communicate hazards such as overhead limbs, rolling material, powerlines, and bystanders.

  • Use hand tools (e.g., pulaski, loppers, handsaws, rakes) to assist with fuels reduction.

  • Drag, pile, and stack slash according to project prescriptions.

  • Assist with pruning, thinning, and brushing operations.

  • Help protect structures and infrastructure during fuels treatments.

  • Participate in daily tailgate safety briefings and after-action reviews.

  • Follow all safety protocols, Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), and agency policies.

  • Assist with pile burning, chipping, or biomass removal as assigned.

  • Perform general crew duties as needed.


  • Required Qualifications
    • Ability to work safely in close proximity to chainsaw operations.

    • Knowledge of basic wildland fire safety principles and situational awareness.

    • Willingness to work in physically demanding outdoor conditions.

    • Ability to follow direction and communicate clearly with crew members.

    • Valid driver's license (if required by employer).

    • Preferred Qualifications

      • Completion of wildland fire training (S-130/S-190, L-180).

      • First Aid/CPR certification.

      • Previous experience on a fuels or wildland fire crew.

      • Familiarity with WUI environments and working near structures.

      • Work near active chainsaw operations and falling material.

      • Variable schedules and extended workdays.
