As a Geotechnical Engineering Technician, you will perform subsurface exploration duties using conventional drilling or in-situ testing techniques. This role involves various forms of drilling such as auger drilling, mud rotary drilling, air rotary, and diamond bit coring techniques. You will also work with in-situ testing techniques including cone penetration testing (CPT) and seismic cone penetration testing equipment, as well as pressure meters and other related apparatus. Your work will include the installation of instrumentation, piezometers, and monitoring wells, all while adhering to safety standards.
Responsibilities
Perform subsurface exploration duties using conventional drilling or in-situ testing techniques.
Conduct drilling that may include auger drilling, mud rotary drilling, air rotary, and diamond bit coring techniques.
Utilize in-situ testing techniques such as cone penetration testing (CPT) and seismic cone penetration testing equipment.
Install instrumentation, piezometers, and monitoring wells.
Work as part of a multiple person team on projects.
Field locate required exploration points and determine elevations of points.
Develop site reconnaissance information.
Load soil samples, exploration tools, and instrumentation/well installation tools and supplies onto trucks or drill rigs.
Prepare and review boring logs using the Unified Soil Classification System (USCS) and basic standard rock classifications.
Prepare United States Department of Transportation (DOT) paperwork as required.
Provide input on exploration tasks and report required maintenance to supervisors.
Participate in pre-task planning and report any safety issues or concerns to management.
Maintain quality standards on all projects.
Train in various aspects of becoming a driller/exploration team member, including equipment maintenance and operation.
Act as an assistant to the lead operator to help perform routine exploration tasks.
Drive medium-duty trucks to various job sites.
Operate and maintain drill rigs, along with associated vehicles and equipment.
Perform geotechnical and environmental drilling including soil drilling, sampling, classification, and in-situ testing.
Maintain records and file reports.
Follow OSHA and company safety procedures.
Conduct verbal communications with clients.
Essential Skills
Experience with construction, hand tools, and as a driller's helper.
Knowledge of geotechnical drilling, soil sampling, and general labor tasks.
Ability to operate and maintain drill rigs and associated vehicles.
Strong communication skills for client interactions.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience in construction, landscaping, agriculture, farming, roofing, and general labor.
Work Environment
This position requires outdoor field work with exposure to all elements. Expect 50% regional travel. A per diem of $59 per day is provided.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Wichita, KS.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $21.00/hr.
