Distinguishing Features of Work

This is an administrative and supervisory position responsible for directing the fleet maintenance garage, bus stop amenities and building maintenance services. This shop is staffed 20 hours a day. The position is also responsible for supervising parts and supplies operation. Work is directed and reviewed through the establishment of goals and subsequent evaluation of progress toward goal attainment.

Examples of Work Performed

  • Reviews and authorizes expenditures.
  • Establishes procedures and practices for financial transactions, including parts inventory, invoice coding, and purchasing card transactions. Develops an asset management plan.
  • Prepares the annual budget to support the plan.
  • Prepares studies and reports related to use of equipment.
  • Reviews services provided and the functioning of equipment; makes recommendations for improvements.
  • Prepares specifications and replacement programs for a portion of the fleet or an entire fleet as necessary and participates in vehicle procurement.
  • May design methods and procedures to provide necessary vehicle or equipment modifications for selected fleet vehicles or a whole fleet.
  • Supervises and evaluates the work of other employees.
  • Trains, coaches and mentors subordinates.
  • Directs the development and administration of employee safety activities.
  • May assume responsibilities of the supervisor in his/her absence.
  • Completion of work assignments requires the operation of a vehicle.

Requirements of Work

  • Thorough knowledge of work order and inventory management
  • Thorough knowledge of the resources required in the maintenance and repair of a broad range of equipment
  • Considerable knowledge of preventive maintenance and asset management
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of financial and managerial accounting
  • Ability to use a computer to access, interpret and record information
  • Ability to read, interpret and apply information contained in technical manuals
  • Ability to effectively plan, organize and supervise the work of others
  • Ability to design a shop reporting system that includes cost accounting reporting and a management information system
  • Ability to conduct comprehensive cost/benefit analyses
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with associates, other employees and representative of other organizations
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing
  • Ability to acquire and maintain a valid Kansas Driver\'s License
  • An employee shall not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the workplace.
