Distinguishing Features of Work

This is supervisory electrical and electronic repair and installation work requiring considerable skill and mechanical ability in the maintenance of electrical equipment and machinery. Assignments are received orally or in writing, and except on new or difficult technical assignments, the employee works independently and determines methods and procedures for completing work. Work may include supervision of helpers and/or maintenance crews.

Examples of Work Performed

  • Repairs and/or modifies existing electrically operated equipment; replaces lamps and ballasts; installs new electrical circuits or modifies existing circuits.
  • Works near high voltage repairing electrical equipment.
  • Uses testing equipment such as oscilloscope, volt, am, and ohm meters to diagnose electrical problems.
  • Conducts preventive maintenance evaluations such as checking for loose connections and/or fuses.
  • Completion of work assignments will require the operation of a vehicle.

Requirements of Work

  • Thorough knowledge in the use of electrical testing devices
  • Working knowledge of the practices, methods, tools and materials used in electrical and related mechanical repair work
  • Considerable knowledge of occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions
  • Ability to use a computer to access, interpret and record information
  • Ability to read and interpret drawings, blueprints, and specifications.
  • Ability to use the tools and apparatus common to the electrical trade area.
  • Ability to bend, twist, turn, pull and stretch on a daily basis as required to perform electrical repair work, sometimes in confined space such as a closet.
  • Ability to carry, set up, and climb a 20-foot extension ladder on a daily basis.
  • Ability to remove and carry an electric motor or similar equipment weighing up to 75 pounds.
  • Ability to effectively plan, organize, and supervise the work of others.
  • Ability to push and/or pull a machine or hand truck with 20 pounds resistance while walking.
  • Ability to work outdoors when inclement weather conditions exist.
  • May require ability to carry a 20-pound light fixture up a 20-foot extension ladder and install it.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with associates, representatives of other organizations, and the public.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to acquire and maintain a valid Kansas driver\'s license.
  • An employee shall not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the workplace.
