Job Description
This role supports a high-volume pharmaceutical packaging operation by performing mechanical maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair on primarily pneumatic production and packaging equipment. Working as part of a small, shift-based maintenance team, the millwright ensures that equipment runs safely, efficiently, and in compliance with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), while also contributing to preventive maintenance, documentation, and continuous improvement activities.
Responsibilities
Perform mechanical maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair on a wide range of packaging and production equipment, with a strong focus on pneumatic systems.
Repair, rebuild, and refurbish machinery and equipment using milling machines, lathes, and a full range of machine shop hand tools.
Conduct general maintenance on production equipment such as fluid bed dryers, film coaters, tablet presses, transfer pumps, vacuum systems, processing vessels, and auxiliary equipment.
Work within the packaging department to respond quickly to unscheduled equipment breakdowns reported by packaging technicians and restore equipment to safe, reliable operation.
Complete scheduled preventive maintenance (PM) tasks and ensure a specific number of PMs are completed each month, using downtime effectively.
Participate in hands-off meetings at the start and end of each shift to review prior shift events, prioritize machine breakdowns, and summarize work completed for the next team.
Coordinate with group leaders and production supervisors to schedule equipment downtime for maintenance within preventive maintenance program timeframes.
Schedule equipment availability to perform preventive maintenance on time and maintain accurate maintenance records in accordance with GMP requirements.
Document all applicable maintenance and repair activities in a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) accurately and promptly.
Support operator training on equipment setup and operation to help ensure proper use and reduce unplanned downtime.
Interpret and work from schematics, HMI interfaces, and technical documentation to diagnose and resolve mechanical and pneumatic issues.
Fabricate, machine, and weld parts as needed to support repairs and modifications to equipment.
Apply GMP work practices and maintain clear, thorough documentation to support regulatory compliance.
Participate in operational meetings, including rapid response meetings, root cause analysis (RCA) sessions, Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) meetings, and other cross-functional forums as required.
Maintain a safe working environment by following safety procedures, using appropriate PPE, and reporting potential hazards or unsafe conditions.
Support mechanical maintenance activities during planned maintenance shutdowns, including extended or modified work hours as required.
Complete a structured onboarding process, including orientation and shadowing with experienced team members, to learn site-specific equipment, procedures, and standards.
Communicate effectively with team members across shifts to ensure continuity of work, clear handovers, and consistent maintenance practices.
Work rotating shifts or weekend shifts as scheduled to provide maintenance coverage across all operating hours.
Essential Skills
Proven experience as a millwright or industrial mechanic performing mechanical maintenance and repair in a production or packaging environment.
Hands-on experience with pneumatic systems, including troubleshooting and repair of pneumatic-based equipment.
Strong mechanical maintenance skills, including the ability to diagnose issues using schematics, HMI interfaces, and technical documentation.
Proficiency in operating milling machines, lathes, and standard machine shop hand tools to repair, rebuild, and refurbish machinery.
Fabrication experience, including the ability to machine and weld parts for equipment repair and modification.
Demonstrated experience working in a GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) environment, with a clear understanding of documentation and compliance requirements.
Ability to maintain accurate, detailed maintenance records and documentation in accordance with GMP standards.
Clear and professional communication skills, both verbal and written, to interact with technicians, supervisors, and cross-functional teams.
Capability to perform preventive maintenance and manage work orders within defined timeframes.
Willingness and ability to work alternating or rotating shifts, including days, afternoons, nights, and maintenance shutdowns as required.
Commitment to workplace safety and adherence to Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) policies and procedures.
Comfort working in a highly regulated pharmaceutical or similar environment with strict procedures and cleanliness standards.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
433A Millwright certification or equivalent trade qualification is highly beneficial.
Experience in pharmaceutical, cosmetic, food, or filling environments is an asset.
Previous exposure to advanced GMP and SOP (Standard Operating Procedure) frameworks.
Experience using a CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management System) for work order management and record keeping.
Background in troubleshooting and maintaining complex mechanical and pneumatic systems within automated packaging lines.
Participation in root cause analysis (RCA) and continuous improvement initiatives.
Strong teamwork mindset with the ability to collaborate in a shift-based environment and support cross-functional goals.
Adaptability to learn new equipment, processes, and technologies through structured orientation and on-the-job training.

Work Environment
The role is based in a GMP-compliant pharmaceutical manufacturing and packaging facility that is well lit and temperature controlled. Work takes place primarily in the packaging department, supporting production equipment and related systems. The position requires working on-site only, with rotating weekly shifts: days (Monday to Friday, 7:00 am to 3:30 pm), afternoons (Monday to Friday, 3:00 pm to 11:30 pm), and nights (Monday to Thursday, 10-hour shifts, 10:00 pm to 8:30 am). A second opening is available on a weekend shift consisting of 12.5-hour shifts with a 30-minute unpaid lunch. The environment is highly regulated and cleanliness-focused, with strict adherence to GMP and safety protocols. Required personal protective equipment (PPE) includes hairnet, beard net (as applicable), mask to cover the mouth, gloves, safety glasses, safety shoes, shoe booties, and full coveralls.
