Our client, a mission-driven, nonprofit-owned provider of journalism is currently seeking a Managing Editor to join their team fulltime.This position will be 5 days per week onsite in New Jersey.About the RoleOur client is seeking an experienced and mission-driven Managing Editor to lead a team of approximately 15 editors and reporters serving local communities across New Jersey. Their journalism reaches readers through 13 publications, published online seven days per week and in weekly print editions.As a nonprofit organization, they offer the opportunity to focus squarely on journalistic excellence, public service, and community impact. The Managing Editor oversees the full lifecycle of news gathering, production, and distribution- ensuring accuracy, quality, and timeliness across digital, email, and print platforms.Key Responsibilities- Recruit, manage, coach, and support local news journalists- Edit all digital articles in collaboration with the Deputy Editor prior to publication- Edit and approve all print pages before production and delivery to the printer- Provide hands-on quality assurance for online content, newsletters, and print layouts- Collaborate with the Production Manager to ensure all daily and weekly deadlines are met- Manage newsroom budgets and administrative systems, including invoicing and expense reporting, in alignment with the organizations overall budget- Oversee the freelance contributor network and manage content-sharing partner relationships- Engage with readers, community members, and stakeholders to build strong relationships and identify new opportunities- Partner with the CEO and Publisher to help evolve the organization toward long-term sustainability and growthQualifications:- Bachelors degree preferred- 5+ years of experience managing local or community news teams preferred- Deep commitment to the mission of local journalism and nonprofit news- Enthusiasm for building sustainable community news organizations in a changing media landscape- Proven experience recruiting, managing, mentoring, and motivating journalists- Comfortable operating resourcefully within a lean budget- Meticulous and efficient editor with strong command of AP style- Able to share weekday and weekend editing responsibilities with the Deputy Editor- Proficient with digital content management systems (Blox preferred)- Experience working with print and email workflows, including InDesign and Constant Contact- Strong ownership of deadlines, schedules, and newsroom workflows- Experience managing budgets, invoicing, and expense reporting- Demonstrated success overseeing multi-channel distribution of staff, syndicated, and freelance content- Willingness to take on varied responsibilities in a fast-paced newsroom- Collaborative mindset suited to an open-office environmentIn this position, you may have access to client or customer systems, confidential and/or proprietary information or data.
