Actalent Cad Drafter in Westbury, New York
Job Title: CAD Drafter – Custom MillworkJob Description
The CAD Drafter will create precise technical and shop drawings, as well as 3D models, for custom millwork, casework, cabinetry, and fixtures used in residential, restaurant, and retail build-outs and fit-outs. This role translates architectural and design intent into detailed, production-ready documentation, supports the full project lifecycle from field verification to final fabrication, and collaborates closely with design, engineering, and production teams in a casual, warehouse-based environment.
Responsibilities
Translate architectural and design intent into detailed shop drawings that clearly show how all millwork components fit and assemble.
Produce accurate technical drawings, shop drawings, and 3D models for custom millwork, casework, cabinetry, counters, built-ins, moldings, and fixtures using AutoCAD and other drafting tools.
Draft for a variety of project types, including residential spaces, restaurant environments (such as coffee shops), and retail build-outs and fit-outs.
Conduct field visits and take precise measurements to verify site conditions, ensure dimensional accuracy, and confirm that designs align with actual field conditions.
Interpret project specifications and architectural blueprints to develop compliant, buildable millwork drawings that meet industry and company standards.
Prepare detailed cut lists and send parts and components to the CNC machine for fabrication, ensuring all information is complete and accurate.
Identify, analyze, and resolve assembly conflicts, interferences, and constructability issues in the drawings before they reach the shop floor.
Collaborate daily with engineers, project managers, designers, and shop personnel to ensure drawings are feasible, accurate, and aligned with production capabilities.
Revise and update shop drawings and 3D models as needed in response to design changes, site conditions, or feedback from the production team.
Maintain organized, up-to-date project documentation and drawing sets, ensuring alignment with project timelines and milestones.
Oversee all drafting-related aspects of assigned projects, from initial field visits and concept interpretation through to final fabrication documentation.
Apply a strong understanding of millwork, joinery, and woodworking techniques to ensure drawings reflect practical, efficient construction methods.
Communicate effectively with cross-functional teams to clarify design intent, resolve questions, and support smooth handoff to production.
Adhere to internal drafting standards and participate in training provided to meet company-specific processes and quality expectations.
Support both renovation and new construction projects, adapting drawings to existing conditions as well as new build environments.
Essential Skills
Minimum of approximately 3+ years of experience in drafting architectural drawings or millwork-related drawings.
Strong proficiency with AutoCAD, using it daily to produce precise technical and shop drawings.
Demonstrated experience producing detailed drawings and 3D models for millwork, casework, cabinetry, and built-ins.
Solid understanding of millwork, joinery, and woodworking techniques and how they translate into practical fabrication details.
Ability to read, interpret, and create architectural blueprints and detailed construction drawings.
Proficiency in technical drafting software, including AutoCAD, and familiarity with 3D modeling tools such as SketchUp or SolidWorks.
Experience with architectural detailing and CAD-based documentation for interior build-outs and fixtures.
Strong problem-solving and critical-thinking abilities, with a keen attention to detail and dimensional accuracy.
Effective communication and collaboration skills to work closely with design, production, and project management teams.
Reliability and consistency in meeting deadlines and maintaining alignment with project schedules.
Prior experience in a millwork drafting or engineering role, supporting fabrication and production processes.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Hands-on millwork experience or exposure to shop and fabrication processes.
Experience drafting for residential, restaurant, and retail environments, including renovations and new construction.
3D modeling experience using tools such as SketchUp or SolidWorks to visualize and validate designs.
Experience with SolidWorks, SketchUp, or similar 3D modeling and CAD platforms for millwork applications.
Cabinetry and built-in furniture drafting experience, including detailed joinery and assembly drawings.
Knowledge of joinery methods and architectural detailing for custom millwork and casework.
Bachelor's degree or relevant technical certification in architecture, engineering, or a related field is a plus.
Comfort working in a production-focused environment where designs must be practical and efficient rather than highly conceptual or creative.
Strong organizational skills for maintaining drawing sets, documentation, and version control across multiple projects.
Work Environment
This position is based in a casual, production-oriented environment within the tri-state area, with a design office and a production warehouse attached. The millwork is custom-made on-site in the warehouse, and the role involves close collaboration with designers and production staff throughout the workday. You will work primarily with AutoCAD and may also use 3D modeling tools such as SketchUp and SolidWorks, as well as interfaces related to CNC machinery. The atmosphere is practical and execution-focused, with an emphasis on accuracy and buildability rather than extensive creative concept work. The role reports into the millwork leadership team and supports both renovation and new construction projects. The organization provides training to align with internal standards. Time-off policies include no holiday or vacation time during the first six months, with one week of sick time accrued. Attire is generally casual and appropriate for an office located within a production warehouse setting.
