Job Title: CAD Drafter – Custom Millwork

Job Description

This role focuses on translating architectural and design intent into highly accurate shop drawings and 3D models for custom millwork, casework, cabinetry, and fixtures. You will work closely with design, engineering, production, and project management teams to ensure that all drawings are precise, buildable, and aligned with project timelines. The position combines field verification, detailed drafting, and coordination with a production warehouse where all millwork is custom made on-site.

Responsibilities

  • Translate architectural and design intent into detailed shop drawings that clearly show how millwork components fit together.

  • Produce precise technical drawings, shop drawings, and 3D models for custom millwork, casework, cabinetry, counters, built-ins, moldings, and fixtures using AutoCAD.

  • Draft layouts for residential projects, restaurant spaces, and retail build-outs and fit-outs with a focus on custom millwork.

  • Conduct field visits and on-site measurements to verify existing conditions and ensure dimensional accuracy before fabrication.

  • Interpret project specifications and architectural blueprints to create accurate, buildable drawings that comply with industry standards.

  • Prepare cut lists and send parts and components to the CNC machine for fabrication in the production warehouse.

  • Collaborate closely with engineers, project managers, designers, and shop personnel throughout the design and production process.

  • Identify and resolve assembly conflicts, interferences, and constructability issues in the drawings before they reach the shop floor.

  • Revise and update shop drawings and models as needed based on design changes, site conditions, or feedback from the production team.

  • Maintain organized documentation, drawing sets, and files while keeping work aligned with project schedules and milestones.

  • Oversee all drafting aspects of assigned projects, from initial field visits through final fabrication handoff.

  • Apply a strong understanding of millwork, joinery, and woodworking techniques to ensure feasibility and quality of designs.

  • Communicate effectively with cross-functional teams to clarify design intent, resolve issues, and support smooth project execution.

Essential Skills

  • Approximately 3+ years of experience in drafting architectural drawings or millwork drawings.

  • Strong proficiency in AutoCAD, with daily, hands-on use for detailed drafting and shop drawing production.

  • Experience producing technical drawings and shop drawings for custom millwork, cabinetry, casework, and fixtures.

  • Ability to create and interpret architectural blueprints and detailed technical drawings.

  • Proficiency with 3D modeling tools such as SketchUp or SolidWorks.

  • Solid understanding of millwork, joinery, and woodworking techniques as they relate to fabrication.

  • Experience with drafting for residential projects, restaurant spaces, and retail build-outs or fit-outs.

  • Ability to identify and resolve assembly conflicts and constructability issues in drawings before fabrication.

  • Strong attention to detail with excellent problem-solving and critical-thinking abilities.

  • Effective communication and collaboration skills for working with design, production, and project management teams.

  • Demonstrated reliability and consistency in meeting deadlines and project commitments.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Prior experience in a millwork drafting or engineering role is preferred.

  • Hands-on millwork experience, including cabinet and built-in design or detailing, is a significant plus.

  • Experience with CNC-related documentation, such as preparing cut lists for fabrication, is beneficial.

  • Knowledge of Microvellum is a major plus.

  • Experience with architectural detailing and joinery is highly desirable.

  • Bachelor’s degree or relevant technical certification in architecture, engineering, or a related field is a plus.

  • Strong organizational skills to manage multiple projects and maintain clear documentation.

  • Comfort working in a fast-paced environment with both renovation and new construction projects.

Work Environment

You will work on-site in a casual, collaborative environment with designers and production teams available throughout the day. The facility includes an attached production warehouse where all millwork is custom made, allowing close coordination between drafting and fabrication. The role supports projects in the tri-state area and involves occasional field visits for site measurements and verification. You will use AutoCAD and 3D modeling tools daily and interact regularly with the millwork team, including leadership in the millwork department. The position follows a standard on-site schedule, and there is a policy of no holiday or vacation time during the initial six-month period, with one week of sick time accruing during that time. The setting emphasizes practicality and production, with limited focus on conceptual creativity and no requirement for product research.
