Amazon Package Testing Engineer, RDPI in Westboro, Massachusetts

Description

The Package Testing Engineer validates Amazon's packaging solutions through rigorous test method development, industry testing and design support.

You will ensure packaging formats perform flawlessly from fulfillment to the customer's door at the lowest total cost and highest sustainability.

You will collaborate with packaging designers, program managers, automation engineers, customer experience teams, and materials scientists to deliver packaging that delights customers.

As a member of the Robotics Delivery and Packaging Innovation (RDPI) team, you will ensure investments in automation-linked packaging formats are grounded in credible, data-driven performance validation.

Key job responsibilities

TESTING AND VALIDATION

  • Produce data-driven technical reports summarizing packaging performance, test results, failure analysis, and actionable design recommendations

  • Execute packaging test methods in accordance with ISTA, ASTM, and other industry standards to evaluate structural integrity, supply chain durability, and customer experience outcomes.

  • Translate Amazon's packaging requirements into ISTA-aligned test protocols, enabling supply chain partners to validate compliance against Amazon's unique operational needs — reducing qualification risk and accelerating partner onboarding.

  • Develop new test methods to address the evolving needs of Amazon's automation, robotics, and materials handling network, including energy absorption standards critical to damage prevention.

  • Own and continuously improve how we test and collect date through SOPs, ensuring methods are accurate, reproducible, and aligned with current best practices.

  • Lead data collection from Amazon's fulfillment network to validate in partnership with data science that testing methods and devices are predictive and accurate.

  • Safely operate industry-standard and Amazon-specific package testing equipment.

COLLABORATION AND STANDARDS

  • Partner with global Amazon lab teams, internal materials science teams, material suppliers, and third-party experts to align test methods, share learnings, and ensure performance outcomes are credible and scalable.

  • Influence sustainable and right-sized packaging decisions through relevant test data and cross-functional collaboration.

  • Develop and strengthen Amazons industry reputation as a packaging subject matter expert through university relationships, trade events and industry governing bodies.

  • Develop packaging test methods tied to network outcomes, including energy absorption standards critical to damage prevention. Define a clear testing strategy that aligns technical standards with operational goals, ensuring methods are actionable and scalable across the network.

DESIGN DOCUMENTATION

  • Contribute to the packaging design process using ArtiosCAD and SolidWorks, applying structural performance validation and testing observations to drive iterative design refinement

  • Generate detailed visual renderings and comprehensive packaging specifications to communicate design intent to cross-functional stakeholders

  • Author technical documents and contribute to cross-functional design reviews and program milestone meetings

TRAVEL

  • Travel as required to engage with customers, supply chain partners, testing laboratories, and material vendors
