CITY OF WEST JORDAN Civil Engineering Intern in WEST JORDAN, Utah

Civil Engineering Intern needed for a West Jordan, UT employer.

Closing Date: May 4, 2026

Status: Temporary, Non-exempt

Pay Range: $20.00 - $24.00

Schedule: Flexible part-time schedule between 8:00 am -- 5:00 pm Monday - Friday

SUMMARY

Under general supervision, the Engineering Intern will support engineers and project managers in both design and fieldwork while gaining exposure to industry-standard practices and tools. The city will offer a flexible schedule to work around college classes as needed.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

• Conducting field surveys, data collection, and on-site construction inspections.

• Assisting in drafting transportation designs using AutoCAD.

• Reviewing reports, studies, and standards.

• Preparing bid documents, quantity takeoffs, and construction cost estimates.

• Installing, downloading, and processing traffic data, and integrating it into GIS maps.

• Providing advice and resolving issues related to construction and design.

• Coordinating active transportation projects, including striping and signing projects.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: High school diploma or GED. Enrollment in, or recently graduated with a bachelor's or associate degree program with major coursework in Civil Engineering or related field.

Experience: Basic knowledge of engineering systems

Certifications/Licenses:

• Valid Utah Driver's License

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of:

• Basic engineering principles and practices, particularly in civil or transportation engineering.

• Or interest in municipal transportation and traffic engineering projects and designs.

• Transportation infrastructure, active transportation projects, and pedestrian crossing designs.

Skill with:

• AutoCAD for drafting and design work is preferred, but not required; experience with AutoCAD can be gained through internship.

• Strong analytical skills for processing and interpreting traffic data.

• Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, etc.) for reporting and data management.

• Written and verbal communication skills for reports, presentations, and collaboration.

• Problem-solving issues related to construction, design, and project coordination.

• Time management and organization handling multiple tasks and projects simultaneously.

Ability to:

• Learn and adapt to new technologies, tools, and methodologies in engineering.

• Communicate and collaborate with engineers, contractors, and city staff to resolve project-related issues.

• Conduct field surveys and collect accurate data in various environments with the direction of engineering staff.

• Read and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and technical reports.

• Learn about construction processes, construction materials, and assist with quality assurance for City projects.

• Work effectively both independently and within a team.

• Follow detailed instructions and execute tasks with attention to quality and safety.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Ability to sit, stand, walk, kneel, crouch, stoop, squat, twist, and lift 25 lbs.; exposure to outdoors, mechanical hazards, and electrical hazards; ability to travel to different sites and locations.
