CITY OF WEST HAVEN Substitute Crossing Guard in WEST HAVEN, Utah

Job Summary

 

Reports to a predetermined location to help children cross the roadway in the safest possible manner and instructs school children on safe crossing techniques.

 

Supervision

 

Received:        Public Works Director or designee.

 

Given:               None.

 

Essential Duties

 

·         Helps children cross the roadway safely and teaches crosswalk safety.

·         Observe road traffic to determine the best timing for road crossings.

·         Admits children and pedestrians into designated crossing walks locations when it is safe to cross the roadway.

·         Observes general activity while on duty to detect traffic safety concerns and reports such observations to their supervisor.

·         Learns and complies with all regulations set by the Department of Transportation (DOT) in regard to school crossing zones.

·         Activate the warning lights within a reduced speed zone, while children are going to or leaving school during opening and closing hours, all reduced speed school.

·         Notify the City of any warning lights, signage, and pavement signage in need of maintenance.

·         Fulfill all other requirements contained in Utah Code 41-6a-303 associated with the duties of school Crossing Guards.

Physical Demands

 

·      &nb sp;  Stand or walk most of the time with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching, and working on irregular surfaces.

·         Work for sustained periods of time maintaining concentrated attention to detail.

·         Lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects weighing up to 30 pounds.

·         Essential functions utilize abilities in talking, hearing, and seeing.  Good eye sight and hearing are essential to performing these duties.

·         Mental application utilizes memory for details, verbal instructions, emotional stability, and discriminating thinking.

 

Working Conditions

 

·         Work assignments are broad and performed with little or no supervision or checking.

·         Stressful, busy, and fast-paced.

·         Extensive contact with people.

·         Work is primarily performed outdoors.

·         Frequent exposure to cold, heat, precipitation, and dust.

·         Job functions include exposure to physical hazards.

 

Annual Training

 

Attends annual Crossing Guards training facilitated by the City and as prescribed in the Manual of Uniformed Traffic Control Devices, Section 7D.06 Training for Adult Crossing Guards, which includes raining, as a minimum, in the following: uniform and equipment; operation procedures; traffic safety, rules, and regulations; and emergency procedures, including first aid and CPR.  Training is partly accomplished by watching a UDOT-produced video on the Safe Routes Utah website (see "Crossing Guards" on Safe Routes Utah). 

 

Attends annual first-aid and CPR training typically provided by the Weber Fire District. 

 

Education & Experience

 

·         A high school diploma or equivalent is not required.

·         Must be at least 21 years of age.

 

Special Requirements

 

·         Must have a valid Utah driver's license.

·         Successful completion of pre-employment drug screening is required.

·         Successful completion of pre-employment physical is required.

·         Satisfactory outcome of criminal and character background checks is required.

·         Must successfully pass ongoing drug testing associated with public safety positions.
