Job Summary:
This position supports the CNO and Nursing Leadership in all aspects of the clinical, financial, and operational management of
the Emergency Department. Specifically, the role is responsible for the hiring and evaluation of all department staff that
provide direct and indirect care for all Emergency Department patients. The position supports nursing practice and the
management of all related clinical processes in accordance with patient safety initiatives, evidence-based practice, Joint
Commission, and other regulatory and governmental requirements. The position has financial oversight for all departmental
operations, staff resources, and supply/equipment budgets. The position has the responsibility to prepare and monitor capital
and expense budget items related to the emergency department.
Accountabilities:
Establishes clinical standards of performance supported by evidence-based practice, Emergency Nurses Association, and American Academy of Emergency Physicians for the care and management of all patients accessing emergency services.
• Creates a collaborative environment with Emergency Medicine Physicians and Physician Assistants to provide a safe, efficient, systematic approach to patient care.
• Works closely with nursing leadership and other clinical departments to closely identify gaps and solutions in systems and processes.
• Utilizes clinical knowledge, research, and evidence based best practices to develop and implement continuous quality improvement initiatives throughout the organization.
• Supports and motivates the emergency department staff to utilize customer service skills and service recovery to create a patient friendly environment.
• Directs and implements processes to assure compliance with Joint Commission, governmental and other regulatory agencies. Special focus on the hospital-based initiatives: JC of Stroke, AMI, Pneumonia, Antibiotic and Sepsis protocols.
• Supports the Nursing Department Magnet principles as evidenced by participation in Shared Decision-Making Councils reflective of the hospital wide councils.
• Facilitates the National Database for Nursing Quality Improvement (NDNQI) by communicating data and ensuring its use and understanding. Design and plans response to Employee Engagement Surveys and NDNQI.
• Facilitates the development and maintenance of a written Nursing Quality Improvement Plan that supports a systematic, coordinated, outcome focused-improvement approach.
• Supports and creates relationships throughout the hospital with other nursing departments and hospital departments to provide integrated care to all patients and ensure adequate patient flow.
• Integrates nursing research with quality improvement activities to identify patient care issues and evaluates changes in practice.
• Act as liaison between Emergency Medical Services (EMS) providers for local EMS agencies and the hospital. Coordinates quarterly EMS meetings. Provides/coordinates educational activities for EMS providers. Provides communication in a safe forum for feedback to and from EMS providers. Acts as the key contact for EMS providers. Works in conjunction with the Chest Pain Center Coordinator to provide feedback in form of case reviews.
• Collaborates with local universities in planning and conducting research. Supports the local universities nursing programs both undergraduate and graduate levels.
• Performs duties in accordance with Penn Medicine and entity values, policies, and procedures.
Education/Experience:
BSN - 5 plus years of experience, Nursing in progressive leadership roles in emergency services environment -required
MS - Nursing or Healthcare Related field - required
Previous experience in a nursing leadership role at a magnet designated organization. Preferred
