DEPARTMENT MARKETING STATEMENT

Metro is seeking a planning and data science professional with a passion for public transportation to join the Ridership and Mobility Analysis team in Metro¿s Planning and Performance department. Our team integrates and leverages big data to develop actionable intelligence on ridership, regional mobility, and the customer experience. Analyses cover a range of topics, including the impact of planned service changes, unplanned disruptions, special events, fare policy, changing regional travel patterns, Title VI equity analysis, and more.

WMATA seeks a public transportation data analyst with experience in ridership reporting, analysis, and data systems to be our next Ridership Systems and Reporting Analyst. The ideal candidate should have demonstrated technical, communications and data visualization skills (including SQL, R, Tableau, and/or PowerBI) to work with a variety of technical and non-technical audiences inside and outside Metro to support National Transit Database reporting, address data quality challenges, and bring data to decision-makers.

The Ridership Systems and Reporting Analyst works with a variety of ridership data sources, coordinates with data engineering teams to improve data structure and quality, and automates reporting functions. Additionally, the analyst supports reporting for the National Transit Database, including internal and external audit processes, and supports stakeholders across Metro with analyses on ridership and crowding.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education

  • Bachelor¿s degree in Transportation Planning, Urban Planning, Information Technology, Data Science or a related field

Experience

  • Four (4) years of experience. Experience must include at least two (2) years of experience:

  • Working with large data sets, including working with database structures, and/or complex data flows that integrate multiple data sources, and

  • Analyzing data using programming languages or data visualization software such as but not limited to SQL, R, Python, Tableau, PowerBI, advanced Excel features, or related data science skills

JOB SUMMARY

The Ridership Systems and Reporting Analyst supports ridership data systems, reporting, and analysis within the Ridership and Mobility Analysis team in the Office of Planning. The incumbent monitors data flows and addresses data problems to ensure that high quality, accurate data on ridership and related topics is available to end users across Metro; works to improve the type and quality of data available; ensures consistency across data sources and reports; creates recurring and ad hoc reports that meet stakeholders¿ needs for informing business decisions, assembles and distributes recurring reports on ridership and related data (including required reporting to the National Transit Database); fulfills data requests; and makes data more widely available through the development and maintenance of dashboards and related tools. The Ridership Systems and Reporting Analyst serves a critical role in ensuring that Metro fulfills reporting requirements, understands the ways that customers are using the system, and is able to respond to changes in ridership and regional travel patterns. The data sources the incumbent works with may include, but are not limited to, Metrobus farebox and automatic passenger counter data, Metrorail fare system and faregate data, multimodal transfer data, Metrobus and Metrorail schedule data, planned and unplanned shuttle bus ridership and operational data, MetroAccess ridership, bus and rail vehicle location and mileage data, and Metrobus and Metrorail occupancy and crowding data.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Manages, monitors, and improves the loading, cleaning, and processing of ridership and ridership-related data to ensure consistent, high-quality, and timely data is available for reporting and analysis.

  • Investigates and addresses data quality problems to improve the consistency and accuracy of the available data and increase analysts¿ understanding of the limitations of the available data.

  • Recommends, implements, and documents methods for working with data sources, both individually and in integrated ways, such as data cleaning processes, adjustment factors, scaling methods, and so forth to improve the consistency and accuracy of Metro¿s ridership-related reporting and analysis and to provide a consistent foundation to other analysts working with the data.

  • Develops, improves, and delivers reports on ridership and related data for internal and external audiences to fulfill internal and external reporting requirements and inform business decisions with timely, accurate, consistent data presented in useful ways.

  • Gathers, checks, and submits ridership and related statistics as part of Metro¿s National Transit Database (NTD) reporting process to comply with federal reporting requirements.

  • Fulfills data requests for ridership and related data to enable internal and external customers to have the data they need to make informed decisions.

  • Conducts analysis of ridership and related data to answer business questions, investigate data quality concerns, and support internal and external customers.

  • Develops, manages, and maintains dashboards and similar tools to provide users with access to ridership and related data.

  • Supports analysts and other end users with software, dashboards, databases, and other methods of accessing ridership and related data to expand access to ridership and related data and provide high-quality customer service to partners of the Ridership and Mobility Analysis team.
