POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the supervision of the Road & Bridge Supervisor, the Section Patrolman is a non-exempt position under FLSA. This position may perform construction and/or maintenance on designated districts of gravel and dirt roads to a level that is safe for the driving public, ensure proper drainage of said roads, and to perform grass, weed and brush control within their designated district. This employee assists in snow and ice removal during inclement weather.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (required)
- Operates motor grader, loader, dump trucks, and other equipment to maintain the quality of the roads;
- Regular and predictable attendance required;
- Maintains drainage of roads and creates new drainage as needed;
- Performs necessary repairs to roads, ditches and culverts;
- Allocates rock within district;
- Provides snow and ice removal during inclement weather;
- Installs drainage structures;
- Performs mowing duties and cuts brush and trees in district;
- Installs culverts and entrances;
- Maintains daily labor and equipment records;
- Performs maintenance and repairs on assigned equipment;
- Reports problems, road hazards, and sign damage in district;
- Reports equipment problems to the shop;
- Maintains a safe work site;
- Ensures positive public relations with public and staff;
- Works with public to explain project details, answer questions, provide timelines for completion;
- Must have (or obtain within 6 months of employment) and maintain a valid Class A Commercial Drivers License with appropriate endorsements.
MARGINAL FUNCTIONS
- Maintains daily labor and equipment records;
- Installs snow fence;
- Performs traffic control activities;
- Performs other duties as deemed necessary or assigned;
- Assists other district patrol workers with their district;
- Assists other departments as needed. Performs other duties as deemed necessary or assigned.
PROBLEM SOLVING
The work involves routine related tasks that require special knowledge regarding proper road maintenance techniques, reading grade elevations and understanding construction drawings and plans. Employee encounters problems pertaining to damage to roads, weather conditions, and obtaining the proper equipment to make necessary repairs on a regular basis.
DECISION MAKING
This person must have the ability to identify and correct road surface deficiencies and provide safe driving conditions for the general public. Employee must prioritize their daily work and effectively allocate their rock throughout their district. In most cases, an employee takes the obvious course of action, but in some situations different options must be considered. Employee is directly responsible for departmental equipment and resources, but does not participate in the annual budget process. Employee is responsible for daily record keeping for cost accounting purposes.
SUPERVISION/ACCOUNTABILITY
This position works with occasional supervision from the Pottawatomie County Road & Bridge Supervisor. Employee occasionally has some supervisory control over subordinate personnel. Work is checked for appropriateness and completeness through inspections and consultations with supervisor.
PERSONAL RELATIONS
Daily contact with the general public, co-workers and supervisory personnel is expected.
