Federal Aviation Administration Supervisory Aviation Safety Inspector in United States

Summary This position serves as a Supervisory Aviation Safety Inspector AFS-200 who will manage a Flight Standards organization and direct the work of multiple organizational units and subordinate employees. Report to the applicable manager of the assigned organization and will execute the agency's aviation safety mission, communicate and build change coalitions; seek out opportunities to support change across the organization; and employ best practices for sponsoring change and manage resistance. Responsibilities The Manager is responsible for aviation safety activities in a complex and dynamic air carrier and/or general aviation environment that includes experience in one or more of the following specialties: Operations, Avionics, Maintenance, Cabin Safety and Dispatch. Applies advanced knowledge of the technical aspects of the work directed and ensures the promotion of the highest level of safety compliance with regulatory standards while utilizing transparency of data exchange that includes the identification of hazards and management of risk. Manages and sets clear performance standards that promote accountability, a sense of individual responsibility, professionalism, and pride for organizational performance to subordinates. Ensures effective managerial work and work quality across all organizations, while maintaining team and individual well-being. Supports effective problem solving by ensuring subordinates are accountable to address challenges and barriers and are clear about roles and responsibilities for decision-making. Confirms active collaboration occurs beyond the organization and that solutions fully consider and represent all relevant perspectives/interests. Makes effective resourcing decisions across several work teams; making certain they deliver expected output within required time frame and budget. Adjusts resourcing plans as needed to meet changing work conditions. Work is typically governed by established policies, procedures, and organizational objectives that frequently leave room for discretion. Resolves all but unique problems without the intervention of higher-level management. Works as a member of a leadership team and contributes to problem-solving beyond own function. Builds and maintains an effective team and ensures they are working together and beyond boundaries, exemplified by shared decision-making, commitment to sharing all relevant information, and considering input from all relevant stakeholders as necessary to create expected results. Effectively aligns with other managers on organizational initiatives, strategies, and goals; testing for alignment with overarching business needs and ensures the team maintains shared accountability to commitments and agreements. Sets stretch goals to promote learning and growth in managerial and leadership skills. Promotes learning and growth, continuing education, and career advancement; provides capacity for employees to engage in developmental activities and assignments. Contacts are primarily within the organization, major subdivision and with the LOB/SO and higher-level management. Designs and holds meetings that promote open dialog, encourages productive conflict, and leads to clear decisions and actions that help teams produce intended results. Demonstrates leadership and commitment to the FAA model EEO program. Not more than two separate incidents involving Federal aviation regulations violations in the last 5 years; 2. Valid State driver's license; 3. Fluency in the English language; 4. No chemical dependencies or drug abuse that could interfere with job performance; and 5. High school diploma or equivalent. Medical Requirements for All Positions: Applicants must be physically able to perform the duties of the Aviation Safety Inspector position in a safe and efficient manner, with or without a reasonable accommodation. The minimum medical requirements include the following requirements: 1. Have good distant vision in each eye and be able to read, without strain, printed materials the size of typewritten characters (glasses and contact lenses permitted); 2. Have the ability to hear the conversational voice (hearing aid permitted); and 3. Not have any physical condition that would cause them to be a hazard to themselves or others that would interfere with their ability to fly as passengers in a variety of aircraft. In addition, applicants for positions that require participation in the operation of the aircraft must: 1. Possess a valid second – class medical certificate in accordance with FAA regulations; and 2. Pass recurrent medical examinations as prescribed by the FAA. Applicants not requiring valid second-class medical certificates who are tentatively selected will be required to: 1. Provide documentation from a board-certified physician certifying that they meet the minimal medical requirements; or 2. Individuals who do not meet the minimum medical requirements, but who are otherwise qualified will receive an individualized assessment to determine whether they can perform the essential functions of the position.
