Overview
GitHub's Core UX organization is responsible for the frontend platform that powers GitHub.com. We're looking for a Staff Software Engineer to work on the systems that make it possible for hundreds of engineers to ship accessible, performant, and reliable UI at scale.
This role sits at the intersection of web infrastructure and the React platform. You'll work on the systems that product teams depend on every day: build and bundling infrastructure, server-side rendering, frontend CI/CD, performance observability, and the migration strategies that move a large codebase forward without disrupting active development.
A significant part of the work ahead involves evolving how we serve our web UI. We're actively building toward an architecture where the presentation layer is decoupled from our backend monolith, enabling edge delivery, streaming responses, concurrent data fetching, and a self-serve model for feature teams to ship UI independently. You'll join an effort already in flight and help drive it to completion, contributing across service boundaries, rendering infrastructure, and developer tooling as the work matures.
We're looking for someone who thinks in systems, cares about developer experience as much as user experience, and is comfortable driving large cross-cutting technical initiatives across many teams. You'll partner closely with other Staff and Principal engineers, Engineering Managers, and Product and Design leadership to shape the direction of GitHub's web platform.
Responsibilities
Lead the design and development of frontend infrastructure systems (build pipelines, server-side rendering, asset delivery, CI/CD) ensuring scalability, reliability, and performance.
Help architect and build the next evolution of how GitHub serves its web UI, including streaming rendering, edge delivery, and the developer experience that enables feature teams to adopt new infrastructure independently.
Drive architectural decisions for the web platform, producing design documents, evaluating tradeoffs, and aligning stakeholders across engineering, product, and design.
Plan and execute large-scale migrations and modernization efforts, managing dependencies and sequencing work across multiple teams without disrupting active product development.
Define and improve engineering quality practices for frontend systems, including testing strategy, deployment safety, observability, and incident response.
Identify and reduce unnecessary complexity and dependencies in the frontend stack, optimizing for long-term maintainability and developer velocity.
Mentor and raise the bar for other engineers through code review, design review, pairing, and establishing best practices and coding patterns.
Stay current with frontend ecosystem developments and evaluate new tools, frameworks, and patterns for adoption where they meaningfully improve outcomes.

Preferred Qualifications
Experience designing, building, and operating large-scale frontend build systems and infrastructure (bundlers, monorepo tooling, CI/CD for UI).
Deep knowledge of React internals and server-side rendering architectures, with experience migrating or modernizing frontend systems in large, multi-team codebases.
Track record of improving web performance (Core Web Vitals, interaction latency, bundle optimization) through systematic, data-driven approaches.
Experience leading cross-team technical initiatives that require coordination across many engineers, managing migration sequencing, deprecation, and incremental rollout.
