About the role
The Portfolio Manager is responsible for the coordinated management of multiple related projects in support of the strategic objectives of their region and function. Overseeing a team of project leaders, the Portfolio Manager initiates projects and makes project leader assignments while working to ensure the ultimate success of the program. As a trusted member of the business unit or functional department leadership, the Portfolio Manager evaluates project business cases, prioritizes project work, and analyzes resource requirements and availability. Using Southco’s chosen project management tools, they continuously monitor the health of projects within their program, conducting project reviews and helping project leaders to address issues and working with other functional departments to ensure the project scope, schedule, and budget goals are achieved. They serve as a mentor to project leaders, identifying and addressing skill gaps and facilitating developmental opportunities. The Portfolio Manager supports Southco’s Project Management Office by identifying and leading process improvement efforts, promoting project management best practices, and setting expectations for their team.
What you will be doing
Program Management: Working with other business unit or department leadership, develop a program of projects to support organizational goals. Using program and project management techniques and disciplines, monitor project status and resolve issues to ensure scope, schedule, and budget goals are achieved. Work with project stakeholders to resolve resource and priority conflicts within the assigned program of projects.
Project Management Best Practices: Drive project management discipline among team members. Work with the Project Management Office to establish and communicate best practices and drive implementation with project teams. Ensure that all projects are managed to quality, delivery, and cost goals. Monitor project progress, identify and mitigate risks, and make timely adjustments to ensure project success. Proposed and drives improvement to Southco project management processes.
Stakeholder Management: Understands, defines, and communicates the needs of all program stakeholders, including Southco leadership, external customers, vendors, and project teams. Regularly reports on project status and performance metrics. Raises any potential risks, issues, or project needs to appropriate stakeholders.
Cost Management: Ensure projects are managed to defined cost goals. Highlight any significant changes or risks within the teams assigned projects and ensure that alignment with internal and external customers is maintained. Implement cost-effective strategies to maximize resource utilization.
Team Leadership and Development: Acts as a mentor and trainer for project leaders. Provides developmental opportunities for team members to improve their skill set. Builds and manages a high-performing team by recruiting, mentoring, and providing ongoing training and development opportunities. Foster a collaborative and results-oriented work environment that motivates and energizes team members.
About you
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or related field required.
Minimum of 10 years of experience in project management, with a proven track record of success in leading and executing complex engineering projects.
Project management certification (PMP, Prince 2, or equivalent)
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify and resolve technical challenges.
Ability to build rapport, influence and motivate others.
Proven ability to execute and deliver results through others, specifically in a matrix environment.
Ability to work with individuals within all levels of the organization.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
