Akumin Development Engineer in United States
Compensation: This position offers a competitive base salary range of $100,000 - 115,000 annually, without room for negotiation above the maximum.

Overview
We are seeking a Development Engineer to support the design, development, maintenance, and troubleshooting of mission-critical data applications within the Akumin technology stack. This individual sits at the fulcrum of our technology evolution: you will ensure the stability and reliability of our existing C#/.NET and SQL Server rails while helping build and inform the transition to our modern Google Cloud Data Lake.
We are looking for a pragmatist who understands that enterprise-grade engineering requires balancing the maintenance of stable, high-value legacy systems with the disciplined adoption of cloud-native data practices. You will collaborate with senior leads to identify where existing systems should be stabilized for long-term use and where the path forward involves migration to our new data platform. This is a growth role for an engineer who excels at backend systems and is excited to own the bridge between proven legacy architecture and our data-driven future.
You'll start by owning stable, mission-critical engineering work while getting exposure and ownership in cloud-native data engineering. Our ideal candidate would be happy owning reliable, production-grade backend/systems engineering (building, maintaining, and migrating enterprise applications and integrations in a regulated healthcare environment), while being truly excited about owning modern data engineering practices (cloud-native data pipelines, data lake foundations, real-time/streaming basics) in the future.
Specific duties include, but are not limited to:
Design, develop and support solutions using C# for web (MVC) and console applications
Maintain and enhance existing SQL Server applications including stored procedures, functions, and complex queries
Develop and maintain SSIS packages for data integration and ETL processes
Troubleshoot IT related application issues with minimal guidance
Support & maintain WCF/SOAP web services within the Akumin enterprise
Participate in code reviews and incorporate feedback to improve code quality
Collaborate with senior developers and Enterprise Architect on solution design
Position Requirements:
Bachelor's Degree
Experience: 3–5 years of professional software development experience with a focus on backend systems, data integration, and enterprise applications.
Strong SQL Proficiency (Elite Level): Advanced knowledge of SQL Server, including writing complex analytical queries, Common Table Expressions (CTEs), window functions, and stored procedure development/optimization.
Relational Data Modeling: Solid understanding of Relational Data Modeling (3NF vs. Dimensional/Kimball). Candidates must understand foreign key relationships, grain standards, and the importance of data integrity in a Medallion architecture.
Cloud Foundations (GCP): Working knowledge of Google Cloud Platform (GCP) or similar cloud environments. Must understand cloud storage concepts andmanageddatabase services (e.g.,BigQuery).
Backend Development (C# / .NET): Proven experience building andmaintainingC# console and web (MVC) applications, with a focus on server-side logic and data processing.
Data Integration (ETL): Experience developing and maintaining SSIS (SQL Server Integration Services) packages or similar ETL frameworks for complex data movement.
Python Fundamentals: WorkingproficiencyinPython forscripting, data manipulation, or automation of manual tasks.
Web Services: Experience building ormaintainingRESTful APIs and familiarity with legacy WCF/SOAP web services.
DevOps Literacy: Proficiencywith Azure DevOps (or GitHub/GitLab) for version control and a solid understanding of CI/CD concepts.
Analytical Troubleshooting: Elite debugging skills with a "data detective" mindset—the ability to self-diagnose complex logic issues and data gaps with minimal supervision.
Communication & Collaboration: Strong verbal and written communication skills; ability to work effectively alongside Senior Developers and Architects in an Agile (SCRUM) environment.
Preferred:
Advanced Cloud Tooling: Experience specifically with GoogleBigQuery, Cloud Functions, or managed Airflow/Composer environments.
Data Transformation: Familiarity with modern data stack tools such as dbt (data build tool) .
Python Certifications: PCEP (Entry-Level) or PCAP (Associate) certifications.
Healthcare Domain Knowledge: Understanding ofHL7/FHIR data structures, HIPAA compliance, or experience in a regulated healthcare technology environment.
Advanced Analytics: Experience with SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) or BI visualization tools (Power BI, Tableau, Looker).
Automated Testing: Experience with unit testing frameworks and a "test-first" approach to ensuring data and code quality.
Web Technologies: Familiarity with JavaScript, jQuery, and AJAX as they relate to backend data integration.
Professional Development: Completion of relevant data engineering or cloud-native coursework from recognized platforms (Coursera, Udemy, Pluralsight, etc.).
