GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) is seeking a full-time Construction and Field Survey Technician located in Wheatland, Wyoming. Under limited supervision, the Construction and Field Survey Technician will perform various duties, including surveys and inspections on preliminary designs and construction projects, and conduct material testing to provide a safe, high-quality, and efficient transportation system for the State of Wyoming.

Wheatland is the largest town in Platte County, Wyoming. The city provides easy access to all types of recreational areas, including various outdoor activities, including hunting, fishing, and different activities to keep the family busy all year! Those who enjoy college sports can drive a little over an hour to watch the University of Wyoming games and cheer on the Cowboys! Wyoming is one of nine states with no income tax.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function that may be performed at the job level.

  • Organize project records.

  • Perform clerical duties as needed.

  • Review and check project documentation.

  • Inspect construction projects.

  • Prepare, review, maintain, and file construction project records, estimates, and reports.

  • Perform topographic surveys.

  • Conduct aggregate gradation testing, density testing for earthwork and surfacing, and concrete testing.

  • Perform survey tasks such as drive stakes, hubs, hold tapes, hold a rod, and instrument operation.

  • Perform minor surveying computations such as slopes, areas, volumes, cuts, fills, etc.

  • Inspect pipe backfill and fill construction.

  • Inspect paving operation to ensure compliance with plans and specifications.

  • Perform basic engineering computations such as areas, volumes, material spread rates, etc.

  • Test, sample, and report materials proposed to be used in construction projects.

  • Review and learn test methods, manuals, and procedures.

  • Perform basic engineering calculations.

  • Perform testing and sampling on bridges and roadways for analysis.

  • Review and learn traffic control methods, manuals, and procedures.

  • Set up, maintain, and remove a safe traffic control plan under live traffic conditions.

  • Ensure proper equipment and supplies are loaded and in good working condition.

  • Perform more complex lab tests of samples and document results for QA/QC purposes.

  • Serve as a technical resource for other employees; attend and complete all designated training sessions to maintain required certifications and perform inspections.

  • Communicate both internally and externally regarding project information and courses of action/consequences on smaller projects.

  • Oversee smaller projects and/or components of larger projects.

  • Assist in permitting processes to obtain water, gravel, plant site, and surveying agreements, and aid in the renewal and file maintenance of these agreements.

Qualifications

PREFERENCES/**AGENCY REQUIREMENTS

Preference may be given to applicants with experience in testing materials and using surveying equipment and software.

**Must have the ability to obtain a Valid Driver's License

**Must have the ability to obtain a Certificate of course completion in Defensive Driving

**Must have the ability to obtain QC/QA Certification in Soils & Aggregate, Asphalt, and Concrete

**Must have the ability to obtain WYDOT Portland Cement Concrete Certification

KNOWLEDGE:

  • Knowledge of materials testing.

  • Knowledge of surveying methods and equipment operation.

  • Knowledge of construction inspection, which includes the interpretation of plans and specifications.

  • Knowledge of documentation of project records.

  • Knowledge of communication with supervisors and contractors.

  • Knowledge of working towards a leadership role.

  • Ability to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions.

  • Ability to perform computer calculations.

  • Knowledge of survey methods & ability to apply such as uploading & downloading of survey files.

  • Knowledge of computers and calculators.

  • Knowledge of surveying.

  • Knowledge of contract time, administration & contract changes.

  • Knowledge of engineering computations/formulas, or the ability to learn.

  • Knowledge of core drilling equipment, pneumatic & electric jackhammers, and hand tools.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

Associate's Degree

Experience:

0-1 year of progressive work experience (typically in Construction and Field Surveying) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Construction and Field Survey Assistant

OR

Education & Experience Substitution:

2-4 years of progressive work experience (typically in Construction and Field Surveying) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Construction and Field Survey Assistant

Necessary Special Requirements

PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Work around high-speed traffic and heavy construction equipment.

  • Work outdoors in a variety of inclement weather conditions, including heat, cold, wind, and moisture.

  • Physical Ability: bending, stooping, and lifting up to fifty pounds; safely lifting and moving necessary materials from one point to another; ability to stand for long periods of time.

  • Employees would only be eligible for one (1) hiring bonus in a 12-month period.

  • If the employee elects to downgrade through an active recruitment and/or appointment during the twelve (12) month period, they would be required to pay the bonus back.
