WSP USA Site Geologist Engineer in Mauritania
Site Engineer/Geologist
We are looking for a junior civil engineer or geologist to join our Africa Mine Waste team in Mauritania to support tailings and geotechnical engineering projects. This is a temporary, fixed term contract, field position at a remote mine site with rotations up to 30 days on site every other month.
Key skills and qualifications
A bachelor’s degree (Bac+4) in civil engineering, geology, or an equivalent field of study
0-2 years’ experiencein construction quality assurance (CQA) for geo-synthetic lining works, earthworks construction, geotechnical site investigations, geotechnical laboratory data analysis and soil logging
Proficiency in Microsoft 365 suite of applications (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint etc.)
Fluency or strong command of English (the company's global business standard)
Strong analytical skills, including the ability to complete engineering calculations and analyses
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Team player with a strong sense of commitment, professionalism, and ownership, who can take clear direction and feedback
Ownership of a health and safety-first culture
Valid driver’s license and clean driving record
Preferred skills and qualifications
A master’s degree (Bac+5) in civil engineering, geology, or an equivalent field of study
Professional certification with an accredited national or international Professional Engineering or Geology body.
Knowledge of international standards for welding high density polyethylene (HDPE) geomembrane liners and tailings distribution pipelines.
Experience in commissioning tailings storage facilities and related infrastructure.
Responsibilities
Oversight of construction quality assurance for earthworks, including examination and assessment of laboratory testing and density testing of earthworks construction in accordance with applicable specifications and standards
Oversight of construction quality assurance for HDPE geomembrane liner deployment and installation, including review of certifications, testing methods, and liner repairs, in accordance with applicable specifications and standards
Oversight of geotechnical exploration and testing, including supervision of test pits, subsurface drilling, and geotechnical logging, as required
Support and report upon onsite investigations and activities and act as a conduit between site and the Engineer of Record
Preparing portions of reports in English that document field and laboratory testing and construction quality assurance activities
Assisting with engineering analyses under the guidance and direction of senior personnel as required
Lead by example in health and safety and be proactive about health and safety incident reporting.
