Overview

GitHub's Billing team builds and maintains the systems behind how millions of developers and organizations pay for GitHub. This includes payment processing, billing infrastructure, abuse detection, and compliance. The kind of work where getting it right really matters.

As part of a platform that supports everything from individual developers to Fortune 500 enterprises, you'll work on systems that process transactions at scale, integrate with broader commerce infrastructure, and directly impact GitHub's revenue and trust. It's a space where engineering decisions carry real financial and compliance consequences, and where you'll build deep expertise in a domain that's increasingly valuable across the industry.

We're a remote-first, distributed team looking for someone early in their career who's curious about this space and eager to learn. You don't need to be a payments expert, but you should be excited about working on systems that handle real money, protect customers from fraud, and keep GitHub's billing experience reliable and trustworthy.

Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain billing and payment systems that serve millions of GitHub users.

  • Help detect and mitigate billing abuse, contributing to the signals and tooling that keep our platform safe.

  • Work across the stack, from backend services to APIs, and occasionally touch frontend where needed.

  • Participate in code reviews, pairing sessions, and on-call rotations. You'll learn from the team and contributing to the quality of what we ship.

  • Write clear, maintainable code and help keep our systems well-documented.

  • Use AI-assisted development tools like GitHub Copilot to work effectively and help the team figure out where they're most useful.

  • Collaborate with partner teams across GitHub and Microsoft on shared problems.

  • Interest in or exposure to payments, billing systems, fraud detection, or compliance.

  • Experience with cloud platforms such as Azure.
