Assignar Forward Deployed Engineer in Australia

Forward Deployed Engineer

This isn't a traditional engineering role. We're looking for someone who lives at the intersection of AI, customer obsession, and shipping — someone who believes the future of software is built with intelligence, not just by hand.

About Us: Building the OS for Construction

Assignar is a mission-driven, cloud-based operations platform built for the construction industry. We help contractors plan, manage, and optimize their crews, equipment, and financial workflows — all in one place. Founded in 2014 and headquartered in Denver, Colorado, with teams across North America and Australia, we're leading the digital transformation of construction.

Our mission is to empower the construction industry through digital innovation for a stronger, safer world. Our vision is to be the source of truth for construction operations data, globally.

We've entered a new era. Our engineering org is going AI-first — not as a buzzword, but as a structural shift in how we build software. AI agents handle the majority of our code. Our engineers own the thinking, the architecture, and the customer outcomes. This is what modern engineering looks like, and you'd be at the centre of it.

What does “Forward Deployed” actually mean?

You'll be embedded close to customers — understanding their problems deeply, translating pain into product, and shipping solutions fast. You're not just building features handed to you from a backlog. You're discovering what needs to exist, then making it real.

You'll work directly with construction contractors, sit in on their workflows, diagnose friction, and then build. You'll use AI agents as your superpower — orchestrating Claude, Cursor, and the AI SDK to ship in hours what used to take weeks. Every sprint, you're shipping something that genuinely helps a real person do their job better.

Responsibilities What you'll own

  • Spend time with real customers. Join calls, site visits, and discovery sessions to understand construction workflows at ground level — not just from Zendesk tickets.

  • Translate customer insights into shipped features. Move fast from discovery to deployment. Weekly releases aren't a target — they're the baseline.

  • Orchestrate AI agents to write, test, and review code. Your leverage comes from how well you direct and verify AI output, not from lines of code written manually.

  • Own features end-to-end. From database schema to UI interaction to production deploy — you're accountable for the whole thing.

  • Work on Assignar Pay — our modern platform (Next.js 16, React 19, Supabase, Vercel) powering the next generation of construction financial workflows: EBA payroll, Schedule of Values, invoicing, and more.

  • Feed insights back to the product team. You're the eyes and ears on the ground. What you learn from customers shapes what we build next.

  • Push the standard forward. Contribute to how we build, how we use AI, and how we think about quality. Leave the codebase better than you found it.

Who You Are The profile we're looking for

  • Customer-obsessed, genuinely. You find real users more interesting than abstract architecture debates. You care about outcomes, not outputs.

  • An AI native. AI-First You've already shifted how you work. Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot — you use these as multipliers, not novelties. You know where AI shines and where to stay in control.

  • A strong full-stack engineer. TypeScript, React, and SQL feel natural. You can navigate a Supabase schema, build a Next.js route, and ship a polished UI without being blocked.

  • Fast and decisive. You'd rather ship something good and iterate than spend weeks seeking perfection. You have a bias for action.

  • Comfortable with ambiguity. You don't need a perfectly groomed ticket. You can move from “here's the customer problem” to shipped solution with minimal hand-holding.

  • A clear communicator. You can explain a technical tradeoff to a non-technical customer, and explain a customer constraint to an engineer. The bridge between worlds.

  • Energised by construction tech. Or at least genuinely curious about the industry. There's a lot to learn here — and it's fascinating once you're in it.

    The stack you'll master

We've deliberately chosen tools that are at the bleeding edge — and that will compound in value for years. No legacy cruft on this platform.

You'll also interact with: Linear (project management) · GitHub Actions · Trigger.dev (background jobs) · Turborepo · React Native (mobile team)

Why Join What makes this role different Hiring Process How we hire

We keep it fast and signal-rich. No LeetCode. No whiteboard puzzles. We care about how you think and how you work.

  • Intro call (30-45 min) — Get to know each other. Tell us what you've been building. Ask us anything.

  • Technical conversation (60 min) — A real problem discussion, not a quiz. We'll walk through something from our actual product together.

  • Paid take-home (3-4 hours) — A realistic task on our actual stack. Use AI tools freely — we want to see how you work, not how you perform without them.

  • Final conversation with founders — Culture, vision, and mutual fit. We want you to leave knowing exactly who we are.
