Jacobs Tunnel Systems Engineering Intern - Summer 2026 in Virginia Beach, Virginia

Jacobs is seeking a Tunnel Systems Engineering Intern to join our Transportation team in Virginia Beach, VA. Jacobs is responsible for the design, operation, and maintenance of all systems that keep tunnels safe, functional, and operational. This includes electrical, mechanical, power, controls, and Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) - essentially everything that makes a tunnel work including the steel and concrete structure.

You will support a multidisciplinary engineering team working on complex tunnel infrastructure projects. This role offers exposure to the full lifecycle of transportation systems—from design through operations—while collaborating with engineers, contractors, and clients. It is an excellent opportunity for students who enjoy understanding how things are built, how systems interact, and how real-world infrastructure operates.

Role Responsibilities:

  • Assist with the design and review of tunnel systems including:

  • Electrical and power distribution systems

  • Mechanical systems (ventilation, drainage, fire/life safety)

  • ITS and controls systems

  • Support project coordination efforts between internal teams, consultants, and contractors

  • Review drawings, specifications, and technical documentation

  • Participate in site visits and inspections within tunnel facilities (as needed)

  • Assist with system testing, troubleshooting, and operational assessments

  • Gain exposure to contract management and client-facing project work

  • Currently pursuing a degree in Engineering or a related field (Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, or Systems Engineering preferred)

  • Strong interest in multidisciplinary infrastructure projects

  • Comfortable working in both office and field environments
