  • Position : Full-time Day shift OB Surgical Technologist

  • Schedule: Work three 12-hour day shifts each week, 7am - 7:30pm

  • Unit: 10-bed Labor & Delivery unit with 2 OR suites

  • Hospital : St. Joseph Medical Center, 253-bed acute care hospital with level II trauma center

  • Location: On the shores of Bellingham Bay with Mount Baker at its backdrop, Bellingham, WA is just 45 minutes South of Vancouver BC and 90 miles North of Seattle. Position Details: This position is responsible for assisting the Surgical team during operative procedures by performing a variety of technical duties to primarily assist in responsibility for the preparation and maintenance of the surgical sterile field for the obstetrical operative patient and/or her infant.

Essential Functions

  • Arrange and inventories sterile set-up for operation and passes items as needed to the surgical team.

  • Understand and apply the principles of asepsis. Establish and maintain sterile field and assure team maintains sterile environment.

  • Assist in preparation and moving of patients.

  • Cleans, disinfects, and sterilizes instrumentation. Assists with clean-up and room turnover.

  • Assists in vaginal births

  • Access computer information as needed, such as preference lists and digital images.

  • Maintain unit supplies by requisitioning and receiving supplies then stocking patient rooms and supply areas to meet patient care needs. Inventory control.

  • Participates in all safety initiatives. Adheres to programs such as SCIP and SCOAP quality initiatives.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Requires: High School Diploma Required: or equivalent

  • Requires: Completion of an accredited Surgical Technology Program or recognized course of training as a Surgical Technologist

  • Requires: Minimum of 1 year experience as a Surgical Technologist, prefer experience with obstetrical and gynecologic surgeries

  • Required: Demonstrated knowledge of and ability to apply age specific principles of growth and development and life stages to meet each patient’s needs

  • Required: Washington State Surgical Technologist Registration

  • Preferred: Certified Surgical Technologist

  • Required: Healthcare Provider Basic Life Support Certification

Skills

  • Well organized, detail oriented and self motivated (Required)

  • Ability to coordinate activities and work collaboratively with others (Required)

  • Ability to execute detailed procedures with accuracy and precision (Required)

  • Basic computer/keyboarding skills including MS Office applications (Required)

  • Understanding of operating room protocols (Required)

Working Conditions

Lifting

  • Patient handling no greater than 35 lbs. without the use of assistive equipment and/or devices (NIOSH).

  • Fine motor skills to be able to grasp and control medical equipment and perform precise procedures.

  • Ability to move around area with occasional sitting.

  • Frequent reaching/ bending/ squatting/ kneeling/ grasping.

  • Lift/Carry: Frequently up to 15 lbs. Occasionally up to 20 lbs.

  • Push/Pull: Frequently up to 20 lbs. force. Occasional up to 30 lbs. force.

Environmental Conditions

  • Exposure to biohazard, body fluids and airborne particles.

  • Exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals.

  • Time spent on site in medical/hospital setting.

Mental/Visual

  • Vision and hearing required within normal limits (glasses, contacts, hearing aids permitted).

  • Ability to communicate and exchange accurate information.

This position is represented by a collective bargaining agreement. There may be more than one opening on this posting.
