Actalent Service Technician in Victor, New York

Job Title: Service TechnicianJob Description

The Service Technician supports existing equipment and assembly projects by fitting and assembling components to build unique, special-purpose machines and automation equipment. This role combines hands-on mechanical and electrical work with controls programming, troubleshooting, and on-site customer support, including domestic and international travel for installation, commissioning, and service.

Responsibilities

  • Travel to customer sites domestically and internationally to install, commission, troubleshoot, and service custom automation equipment.

  • Work closely with engineering and build teams to build, debug, and commission custom automation systems and special-purpose machinery.

  • Modify and optimize PLC, HMI, motion control, robot, and vision system programs to meet customer and project requirements.

  • Troubleshoot electrical, pneumatic, mechanical, and control systems to diagnose issues and implement effective corrective actions.

  • Support and, when needed, lead factory acceptance tests (FAT) and site acceptance tests (SAT) to ensure equipment meets performance and quality standards.

  • Respond promptly to service calls and provide both on-site and remote technical support to customers.

  • Build, wire, and integrate electrical panels and field devices in accordance with applicable codes and standards.

  • Integrate and commission industrial networks, including EtherNet/IP, Profinet, and Modbus, within automation systems.

  • Perform mechanical assembly, alignment, and adjustment of equipment components and subsystems.

  • Integrate and support peripherals such as servo presses, leak testers, laser systems, and data collection systems.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to resolve technical challenges and improve machine performance and reliability.

  • Document service activities, modifications, and test results clearly and accurately for internal records and customer communication.

  • Maintain a strong customer focus by communicating clearly, managing expectations, and ensuring timely resolution of issues.

  • Manage time and priorities effectively to balance travel, on-site work, and remote support responsibilities.

Essential Skills

  • Hands-on experience with PLCs, HMIs, and motion control systems, particularly Allen-Bradley and Siemens platforms.

  • Experience with industrial robotics systems such as Fanuc, ABB, Kuka or similar brands.

  • Experience working with industrial vision systems, including Cognex and Keyence.

  • Ability to modify and optimize PLC ladder logic and related control programs.

  • Strong troubleshooting skills across electrical, mechanical, pneumatic, and control systems.

  • Ability to build and wire electrical panels and perform field wiring to industrial standards.

  • Experience with pneumatics and fluid power integration in automated equipment.

  • Familiarity with industrial networks such as EtherNet/IP, Profinet, and Modbus.

  • Mechanical assembly, alignment, and troubleshooting skills for complex machinery.

  • Knowledge of industrial sensors, transducers, and their integration into control systems.

  • Ability to integrate peripherals such as servo presses, leak testers, laser systems, and data systems into automation equipment.

  • Customer-focused mindset with the ability to deliver results in demanding environments.

  • Clear and effective verbal and written communication skills.

  • Strong problem-solving, critical thinking, and analytical abilities.

  • Organizational skills with a high attention to detail and the ability to thrive under pressure.

  • Effective time management skills and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Associate degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Mechatronics, Robotics, or Computer Engineering, or equivalent experience.

  • Industry certifications from providers such as Fanuc, Siemens, Keyence, or similar may be considered in place of experience.

  • Familiarity with relevant electrical and safety codes and standards, including UL508A, CSA, and CE.

  • Experience with automation, robotics, and vision systems in an industrial environment.

  • Ability and willingness to travel up to approximately 40% of the time, both domestically and internationally.

  • Ability to remain organized, detail oriented, and effective when working under time constraints.

  • Comfort working in a fast-paced environment and adapting to changing customer and project needs.

Work Environment

This role involves a mix of on-site customer work and time in a manufacturing or assembly environment. The position requires up to approximately 40% domestic and international travel for machine installation, commissioning, and service, with travel incentives available. Work is primarily performed indoors around moving mechanical parts in a moderate noise environment, with occasional outdoor work in all types of weather. The role is physically demanding and regularly requires standing, walking, pushing, pulling, stooping, kneeling, crouching, using hands to handle or feel, reaching with hands and arms, talking, hearing, and smelling. The technician may occasionally sit, climb, balance, and crawl, and must be able to regularly lift and move up to 50 pounds unassisted. Vision requirements include close, distance, color, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Proper personal protective equipment (PPE) and safety gear must be worn as required. The environment supports hands-on work with advanced automation technologies, providing exposure to a wide range of mechanical, electrical, controls, robotics, and vision systems.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $72800.00 - $93600.00/yr.
