Position Description
The Engineering Technician II will perform specialized high level technical support and design work, act a liaison with other parties for the Professional Engineer in the field, and/or perform survey or construction inspection.

Job Duties and Responsibilities
Surface Water and Sewers - Construction Inspector
Perform inspections and investigations of tunnels, outfalls, maintenance holes, catch basins, and other sewer infrastructure to evaluate assets’ condition and performance.
Communicate any deviations discovered in plans, specification, materials, methods, schedules, or MNDOT specifications to the Engineer.
Perform advanced mathematical calculations and computations in connection with engineering project work and costs, including arithmetic and trigonometry, as well as grades and quantities.
Inspect and ensure proper construction techniques for sanitary and storm sewer projects with various contractors and governmental agencies.
Assist in preparation of paperwork and documentation describing sewer improvements needed within reconstruction and construction projects, predominantly street sewer construction, repair, and rehabilitation activities.
Field verify, enter, and maintain records using modern software (such as Adobe, ArcMap, Maximo, Excel, etc.)
Act as the engineer's field representative for communication with Construction Crew Foremen (both City Staff and private vendors) on a construction site.
Perform contract administrative duties by tracking daily items which could include equipment and personnel hours, manufacturer of materials, quantities, work progress, weather, etc.
Perform a variety of engineering technician work in the office regarding construction project design, shop drawing review, cost estimation, handling communications, completing forms, etc.
Attend weekly construction meetings.
Train and give work direction to Engineering Technicians I.
Other duties as assigned.
Transportation Engineering and Design - Surveyor
Perform field work for topographic surveys, horizontal and vertical control, construction staking, as-built, easements and boundaries.
Assist in operating survey equipment such as Total Station, data collector, survey levels, and GPS equipment.
Make precise surveying measurements.
Perform surveying calculations with speed and accuracy.
Review field survey data for completeness and accuracy using CAD software and make any necessary edits.
Maintain records related to work activities and prepare reports.
Assist Crew Chief in completion of assigned tasks.
Clearly communicate technical information to other surveyors, contractors and City staff.
Transportation Engineering and Design – Construction Inspection
Act as City Representative with outside contractors and other departments.
Inspect roadway, paving, grading, drainage, curb and gutter, sidewalk, and related public works construction projects.
Ensure contractor is meeting the contract per approved plans, specifications, permits, and City, state, and federal standards.
Monitor construction methods, materials, quantities, and workmanship for during project construction.
Conduct field measurements and quantities; verify pay items and assist with progress payments.
Maintain accurate daily inspection reports, field notes, photographs, and construction documentation.
Identify construction deficiencies and notify contractors and supervising engineers; assist with resolution.
Observe and document traffic control and job-site safety compliance.
Coordinate inspections with utility companies, contractors, surveyors, and City staff.
Respond to inquiries related to construction activities.
Other duties as assigned.
For all positions, typical work hours are 7:00 am-3:30 pm,with potential overtime, longer weekdays, and Saturdays during the construction season. During the construction season, most of the work will be outdoors.
Required Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
Eighteen (18) months of post high school training in Civil Engineering Technology or equivalent.
Minimum Experience
Two years of experience performing similar duties.
Equivalency
An equivalent combination of education and experience closely related to the duties of the position may be considered.
License/Certifications
Valid Driver's License.
Selection Process
The selection process will consist of one or more of the following steps:a rating of relevant education and experience and/or an oral examination (100%). It is important that your application show all the relevant education and experience you possess. This information will be used to determine which candidates will proceed in the selection process. A submitted application is also used to verify the answers to any supplemental questions. Only those candidates who attain a passing score(70%)on each step in the selection process will be placed on the eligible list. The City of Minneapolis Human Resources Department reserves the right to limit the number in any phase of the selection process.
Background Check
The City has determined that a criminal background check and/or qualifications check may be necessary for certain positions with this job title. Applicants may be required to sign an informed consent form allowing the City to obtain their criminal history and/or verify their qualifications in connection with the position sought. Applicants who do not sign the informed consent form will not be further considered for the position.
Drug and Alcohol Testing
All job applicants must pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol test once a conditional offer of employment has been made. Applicants will be required to sign a notification and consent form prior to undergoing drug and alcohol testing. Applicants who do not consent to undergo drug and alcohol testing will not be required to do so and the City will withdraw the conditional job offer, resulting in the job applicant no longer being considered for the position.

Eligible List Statement
The names of applicants who meet minimum qualification and who pass the screening process shall be placed on the eligible list for employment consideration. This list will be certified to the hiring manager who may use the list to fill a vacancy of the same job title. This eligible list will expire one (1) month after it has been established.
