Port of Vancouver Insurance Risk Management Specialist in Vancouver, British Columbia

The insurance risk management specialist is responsible for the delivery of financial services, including enterprise risk management and insurance as a primary focus of this position.

What you do:

  • Provide subject matter expertise on issues related toinsurance.

  • Identify and assess exposures to legal liabilityclaims and property losses arising from the Authority’s interests in marineterminals, leasehold properties, and other assets including piers, docks,buildings, equipment, utilities, roads, contents and other assets.

  • Identify cost of replacing or rebuilding insurableassets, including where such assets are exposed to any weather, water or earthmovement peril.

  • Identify vulnerability to business interruptionresulting from destruction or major damage. Estimate the financial consequencesof potential accidental losses. Classify potential losses according tofrequency and severity.

  • Considercost/benefit aspects and administrative issues with respect to choice of riskmanagement technique under consultation with brokers, legal department, andother internal experts as necessary.

  • Advisedepartments in the drafting and negotiating of insurance terms for land useagreements, works contracts, and consulting agreements as necessary.

  • Participate innegotiation to purchase liability and property insurance policies with brokersand tenants to obtain the appropriate coverage. Maintain a register summarizingthese policies.

  • Provide propertyloss information to, and reconcile claims with, insurance adjusters. Contributetowards the resolution of insured claims resulting from legal action in a teamenvironment with the legal department, outside counsel, brokers, and insurers.Negotiate as needed to appropriately resolve claims.

  • Maintain a claimdatabase that tracks incidents, losses, and claims in a timely and accuratebasis. Utilize claim information for detailed statistical and operational riskanalysis.

  • Support VFPAEnterprise Risk Management function and risk assessment process by identifying,evaluating, and reporting on the Authority’s risks.

  • Support thedeliverables of the Corporate Business Resumption Plan as required.

  • Develop andupdate credit risk guidelines that outline the framework for assessing andmitigating credit risk for tenants and other counterparties.

  • Identify, assess,monitor, and report on high-risk tenants and credit risk of top tenantscompared to the overall portfolio.

  • Perform financialstatement analysis and due diligence on tenants and other counter parties todetermine their financial capacity to meet lease obligations.

  • Providerecommendations on credit risk mitigations through security and/or contractualarrangements.

  • Prepare monthlyand quarterly pension fund performance reports for the Pension AdministrativeBoard.

  • Assist withspecial projects and other administration activities to ensure deliverables arecompleted as required.

  • Assist in thepreparation of the annual Business Plan and operating budget, includinginsurance expense forecast, Borrowing Plans, and other areas as required.

  • Create, maintain,update and improve upon financial models needed to forecast the impact ofchanges in operations and agreements on corporate financial performance.

What you bring:

  • A Bachelor of Commerce degree specializing in finance,or equivalent.

  • A minimum of 4 years of experience in risk management,credit analysis including dealing with corporate insurance, specificallynegotiating claims and insurance terms.

  • Proficient computer skills, especially spreadsheet,are essential.

  • A Chartered Professional Accountant and/or CertifiedRisk Manager (CRM) designation is an asset.

  • Must have excellent interpersonal and communicationskills, including the ability to liaise effectively and positively with bothstaff and outside contacts.

  • Demonstrated aptitude and ability for tactful anddiplomatic negotiation, along with solid analytical abilities.

  • Must be a highly motivated and proactive individualwith a strong orientation to customer service.

  • Must be committed to a philosophy of continuousimprovement in all work processes.

Working environment: Normal office conditions with the requirement for site visits as required.
