Job Title: Postdoctoral Associate - Analytical Capabilities
Office/Location: SUNY Polytechnic Institute
The Artificial Intelligence Exploration (AIX) Center at SUNY Polytechnic Institute seeks a postdoctoral associate to develop methods and metrics for evaluating how consultation with large language models affects analytical work products and team interaction patterns in complex information environments. The appointment is for one year, renewable based on funding and performance. The focus is on building infrastructure for capturing observable traces of human-AI interactions and developing evaluation frameworks for analytic quality. Applications span information campaign assessment, higher education advising systems, municipal policy development and other organizational decision-making contexts. The position involves collaboration with partner researchers examining information analysis from complementary disciplinary perspectives.
The successful candidate will join a multidisciplinary research team comprising mathematicians, physicists, engineers, and other faculty members at SUNY Polytechnic Institute. The position is based in Utica, NY.
Job Responsibilities
Design test suites modeling realistic analytical processes for comparing traditional and AI-augmented analysis
Build infrastructure for capturing observable traces of human-AI analytical interactions
Develop tools and metrics to quantify accuracy and efficiency of AI-augmented research
Operationalize analytic quality as measurable dimensions across multiple contexts
Conduct mixed-methods validation including controlled experiments, observational studies, and user research
Perform sequence analysis, network analysis, and pattern mining to identify team-level interaction motifs
Write and prepare papers for submission to peer-reviewed journals and conference proceedings
Participate actively in the preparation and writing of grant proposals
This position is contingent on the satisfactory completion of a background check; this position may require annual checks.
Salary: $60,000 - $65,000
Job Requirements:
Minimal Qualifications:
The successful candidate will hold a doctoral degree in computational social science, human-computer interaction, computer science, data science, social science, cognitive science, information science, or a closely related field, completed by June 1, 2026.
Required Skills:
Required skills include strong quantitative methods and data analysis, ability to build working analytical tools and technical infrastructure, ability to translate between technical implementation and analytical/organizational processes, strong communication and writing skills for interdisciplinary research, and creative problem solving with commitment to understanding AI-augmented work as a human experience.
Preferred Skills:
Preferred skills include experience with open-source LLM infrastructure or vendor-independent systems, background in decision-making research or collaborative work analysis, familiarity with information environments or narrative analysis, social network analysis or conversation analysis experience, track record of interdisciplinary collaboration and publications, and understanding of analytical workflows in complex information environments.
