Purpose

Provide senior-level expertise in geology with a strong focus on permitting, geologic modeling, and resource evaluation. Experience with metals exploration is required and cement, aggregates, industrial minerals is preferred. Responsibilities include overseeing site characterization, resource and reserve estimation, regulatory compliance, and permitting strategies. The role involves technical leadership, client interaction, and mentoring of staff while delivering innovative, practical solutions across mining, construction materials, and environmental projects.

Responsibilities

Leadership and Direction

  • Receive broad guidance relating to overall key objectives, critical issues, new concepts, and policy matters and general parameters for execution. Receive direction as needed, and especially on highly complex assignments. Independently apply extensive and diversified knowledge of principles and practices in broad areas of assignments and related fields. Review work produced by staff for quality assurance.

  • Position does not include direct supervisory responsibilities but will serve as a lead/resource among team of colleagues in equivalent roles to share technical proficiency, guidance, and mentorship. May occasionally assist in delegation of assignments or provide feedback to managers.

At the Operational and Company Level

  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary and/or cross-functional teams that may include other geoscientists, geologists, engineers, and land surveyors to complete projects.

  • Assist with the marketing of the firm’s capabilities to establish new clients and enhance relationships.

Do the Work

  • Lead, mentor, and support the project team with the goal of maximizing performance and efficiency.

  • Assist with project planning, scheduling, and resource management to meet project commitments.

  • Monitor QA/QC practices and procedures to ensure compliance with company standards and identify opportunities for improvements.

  • Manage and conduct environmental and hydrogeological field investigations and remediation projects at hazardous waste / contaminated sites, including site characterization / investigation, remediation, due diligence investigations, groundwater exploration, and aquifer characterization. Provide recommendations for sustainable practices, and prepare reports related thereto.

  • Perform basic to moderately complex geophysical testing, hydrogeologic investigations, and/or geotechnical instrumentation.

  • May perform / conduct field subcontractor oversight inclusive of drilling, monitoring well construction, waste transportation and disposal, and heavy equipment operation.

  • Direct the production of maps and plans in digital format using GIS.

  • Utilize advanced software and tools to interpret geological data and create maps.

  • Develop and implement environmental site assessment, field sampling, and data analysis efforts.

  • Perform environmental data management, data validation, statistical analysis, including trend analyses, data visualization, and numerical modeling.

  • Perform chemical data and contaminate fate and transport evaluation.

  • Develop site conceptual models, including climate, geology, hydrogeology, and other relevant site features.

  • Assist with the proposal, design, cost estimating, and implementation of groundwater remediation, sediment management, stream restoration, and/or environmental construction projects.

  • Support surface water and groundwater modeling efforts.

  • Assist with environmental due diligence, regulatory compliance services, and permit acquisition.

  • Prepare reports, including descriptions of geology, hydrogeology, extent of contamination, and fate and transport of site contaminants.

  • Support development of site remediation processes, including removal actions and in-situ treatment.

  • Support remediation planning, including preparation of planning and safety documents.

  • Oversee site remediation field activities, including groundwater injections and removal actions.

  • Prepare technical geologic reports and maps, interpret research data, and recommend further study or action. May also prepare technical letters, memoranda, plans, and specifications.

  • May apply principles of rock and soil mechanics for engineering projects.

  • May apply all branches of geologic knowledge to conditions that affect planning, design, construction, operation, and safety to engineering projects.

  • May manage submersible, bladder, and peristaltic pumps and related equipment.

  • Stay up-to-date with industry trends and advancements to continuously improve geological practices.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in geology, mining, environmental engineering, or related field preferred.

  • Master’s degree preferred.

  • Five or more (5+) years of demonstrated experience in environmental consulting, engineering, or related disciplines.

  • Professional Geologist license preferred, or progress toward completion.

  • Demonstrated experience relevant to hydrogeologic investigation, remediation or treatment process testing, development, and design; systems modeling; or engineering applications associated with groundwater, soil, sediment, or surface water.

  • Demonstrated experience with environmental investigations including various groundwater, soil, and soil vapor sampling methodologies.

  • Demonstrated experience monitoring well drilling, logging, installation and sampling; developing boring logs and review/ interpretation of geological boring logs.

  • A broad understanding of soil and concrete conditions and construction related issues as they relate to geotechnical engineering and construction material testing (CMT) services.

  • Strong field orientation and provide problem solving skills.

  • Experience with AutoCAD, ArcGIS, GIS, EVS, and/or database management software is a plus.

  • HAZWOPER Certification and understanding of safety protocols preferred.

  • Frequent travel required, 0-5 days per month on average.

  • Must hold a valid state driver’s license and successfully pass a motor vehicle check.

Salary and eligible variable compensation (if any) commensurate with experience. Range $90,000 - $130,000 and includes a comprehensive benefits package.

Physical Demands and Working Environment

  • Primarily outdoor work environment which may include adverse weather conditions, varying temperatures, excessive noise, and/or potential hazards.

  • Mobility around a job/construction site to include walking, bending, crawling, climbing, squatting, or kneeling and wearing of required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

  • Frequent and prolonged use of data collection equipment and/or drones, necessitating walking the assigned study area to complete data collection over the course of several hours.

  • Partially indoor professional office environment which may include bright/dim light, noise, fumes, odors, and traffic.

  • Mobility around an office environment.

  • Frequent and prolonged use of standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.

  • Primarily local travel during the business day, although some out-of-the-area and overnight travel may be required according to the needs of the business.
