Sr Mortgage Underwriter (Alternative Lending)

Location: Hybrid – Greater Toronto Area (3 days in-office: Monday–Wednesday, 2 days remote)

Salary: $85,000 – $90,000

Overview

We are seeking an experienced Sr Mortgage Underwriter to join a fast-growing, innovative lending organization. This is a high-impact role suited for someone who thrives in a high-volume, fast-paced environment, is confident making independent lending decisions, and is comfortable communicating directly with brokers by phone.

This organization is in a strong growth phase, offering stability through a balance sheet lending model while continuing to evolve toward prime lending. The environment is dynamic, with opportunities to contribute to process improvements and scale alongside the business.

Key Responsibilities

• Underwrite approximately 3 mortgage deals per day in a high-volume pipeline

• Review, condition, restructure, and approve mortgage applications within lending authority

• Handle exception-based underwriting and provide solutions on complex deals

• Communicate directly with brokers via phone to gather information, provide updates, and move deals forward efficiently

• Work closely with internal teams and assigned Business Development Managers (BDMs) to manage deal flow

• Ensure all underwriting decisions align with company policies and risk appetite

Must-Have Qualifications

• Minimum 2+ years of experience as a Mortgage Underwriter with lending authority

• Proven ability to make independent credit decisions (not a support-only role)

• Strong experience in alternative/B lending environments

• Demonstrated success in a high-volume underwriting setting

• Deep understanding of the Ontario real estate market, particularly:

• Western Toronto

• Central Toronto

• Downtown Toronto

• Strong verbal communication skills with a phone-first mindset (not email-reliant)

Nice-to-Have

• Experience working with brokers and managing deal pipelines in a fast-paced setting

• Exposure to scaling or high-growth lending environments

Important Note

• Candidates with commercial underwriting experience only will not be considered due to the required pace and structure of residential deal flow.

• This is a Sr-level role requiring hands-on underwriting experience and decision-making authority.
