Position Description
The Registered Pharmacy Technician is responsible and professionally accountable for accurately and efficiently carrying out the technical tasks of pharmaceutical dispensing and compounding and for checking and approving the final release of product prior to administration to the patient. These activities are carried out in a manner that ensures patient safety and compliance with regulatory requirements, professional standards of practice, policies and guidelines, with due regard for ethical principles and protection of patient privacy and confidentiality.
Here's Some of the Things You'll Get to Do!
Dispensing
Filling, checking and releasing of individual prescriptions, unit dose carts, and emergency supplies of medications using appropriate procedures for packaging, labeling, documentation and delivery
Filling, checking and releasing of unit dose carts and delivery
Monitoring and replenishing medication supplies on nursing units in automated dispensing cabinets and supplies in the pharmacy to ensure good dating
Dispensing, and replenishing medication orders from an automated pharmacy inventory robot
Help to maintain drug accountability records such as narcotic documentation, investigational, compassionate and SAP drug records
Ensure medication storage areas are clean and in good order
Non-sterile Compounding
- Non-sterile compounding, checking and approving final release of specialty pharmaceutical formulations prepared using appropriate specialized compounding skills, equipment and pharmaceutical calculations in accordance with worksheets, procedures and instructions approved by a pharmacist.
Sterile Compounding
- Sterile compounding preparation, checking and approving final release of sterile products using appropriate specialized skills, equipment, aseptic technique and pharmaceutical calculations in accordance with worksheets, procedures and instructions approved by a pharmacist within a NAPRA compliant clean room
Repackaging
- Repackaging, checking and approval of release of oral solid and liquid medications repackaged in standard doses
Growth Opportunities
Research Support Pharmacy - Entering, dispensing, maintaining inventory and documenting prescriptions for clinical trial research
Pharmacy Informatics - Supporting ongoing use and building new products for the pharmacy technologies including for the inventory robot, automated medication cabinets, IV workflow system, hospital information system
Narcotic Technician - Maintaining documentation, inventory products and inventory control for controlled and narcotic medications
Drug Procurement - Maintaining medication supplies for the hospital via ordering, receiving, distributing and control of drugs as well as managing backorders and shortages of critical medications
Advanced IV Additive Training - Specialized training for sterile product preparation including medications for total parenteral nutrition, chemotherapy, gene therapy and high-cost, novel therapies
Special Access Program - Entering, dispensing, maintaining inventory and updating approval documentation for medications procured through Health Canada's Special Access Programme
Here's What You'll Need
Completion of a two-year accredited community college Pharmacy Technician training program
Registration as a Pharmacy Technician with the Ontario College of Pharmacists
Experience with dispensing, compounding, and aseptic technique
Excellent teamwork skills
Excellent communication skills
High accuracy and attention to detail
Strong keyboarding skills and experience with computer order entry
