Position Description
The Congenital Heart Surgeons' Society (CHSS) Centre for Research and Quality ( https://crq.chss.org/ ) is a unique North American collaboration of pediatric cardiac surgeons working on high impact research. The CHSS Center for Research and Quality (CRQ) has Operations and Coordination Centers at SickKids and the Cleveland Clinic which operate in tandem. The CHSS CRQ is devoted to encouraging and stimulating investigations and studies that will increase the knowledge of congenital cardiac physiology, pathology and therapy, to correlate and disseminate such knowledge and is dedicated to research to find better treatment for children with Congenital Heart Disease.
The CHSS CRQ is seeking to hire a Clinical Data Abstractor to work at The Hospital for Sick Children. The Clinical Data Abstractor is a high-performing individual who is responsible for detailed medical record review and abstraction of clinical data required for research, quality improvement and/or departmental registries. The Clinical Data Abstractor will work closely with research staff across multiple sites, research fellows and clinicians to support the CHSS CRQ with data abstraction, database development, and preparing departmental reports using defined metrics.
Key Responsibilities
· Abstract a large volume of clinical case records to support research and quality improvement
· Manage the overall record retrieval process for collecting numerous complex data elements from individual patient records according to measure specifications and project requirements
· Complete all data input, error report analysis and correction, and resolution of errors related to data entry,
· Ensure the integrity and accuracy of information collected and entered into the data collection system
· Identify opportunities for performance improvement based on reliable data trending. Make recommendations based on recognition and analysis of gaps in documentation
· Assess potential problems affecting the data collection process and coordinate follow-up of problem resolution with the team and/or manager
· Communicate any measure requirement changes to appropriate staff
· Act as an expert and resource to professional staff and provide education to other team members and site coordinators as needed
Skills or Experience Required
· Minimum Bachelor's degree required. Higher degree or international medical graduate strongly preferred.
· Minimum 1 year experience performing medical record reviews and data abstractions for research, quality improvement, and/or clinical registries required.
· Minimum 2 years' experience in research or hospital environment strongly preferred.
· Knowledge of cardiovascular surgery and cardiac anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology required.
· Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications
· Proficiency in REDCap is an asset
· Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with demonstrated ability to work well with all levels of staff
· Strong critical thinking skills with ability to handle changing work environment and prioritize activities based on department needs
· Detail-oriented, committed to high quality data abstraction, meets quality and productivity standards
· A commitment to understanding and aiding in the pursuit of equity, diversity & inclusion
