Job Purpose

The Mobile Master Technician - Mission Critical Projects is a master-level technician deployed to high-priority Herc Rentals locations across the country. This long-term role is designed to provide expert technical support, reduce downtime, and ensure fleet readiness in critical operational zones. The position requires extensive travel (up to 90%) and the ability to work independently while building strong relationships with local teams and customers. In some instances, this role could involve temporary relocation for 12 months or more at a time.

What you will do...

  • Travel to designated Herc branches and customer job sites to perform diagnostics, repairs, and preventative maintenance on a wide range of fleet equipment.

  • Prioritize service needs in high-impact areas, including emergency repairs, fleet readiness for large-scale projects, and support for under-resourced branches.

  • Diagnose and troubleshoot fuel systems, electrical systems, hydraulic systems, and propane systems.

  • Recondition and replace parts to restore equipment to safe operating condition.

  • Educate local teams and customers on proper equipment usage and maintenance to prevent future breakdowns.

  • Maintain a clean and organized work area at each job site and adhere to all safety protocols both in the shop and on the road.

  • Maintain assigned truck housekeeping and parts inventory

  • Maintain equipment to company standards of readiness, completing appropriate paperwork for repair tracking and accounting, including applicable DOT driver logs and electronic paperwork

  • Produce timely and detailed service reports and repair logs for each location visited.

  • Collaborate with branch managers and regional operations to identify and resolve recurring technical issues.

  • Serve as a technical mentor to local technicians when needed.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required; technical school or trade certification preferred.

  • Minimum 7 years of experience as a heavy equipment technician, preferably in field service roles.

  • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record; CDL preferred.

  • Must possess a complete set of personal tools suitable for heavy equipment diagnostics and repair.

Skills

  • Strong diagnostic and repair skills across mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical systems.

  • Ability to diagnose and service diesel and gas engines, transmissions, air brake systems, and electronic controls found on trucks, heavy equipment, and support equipment.

  • Proficient in reading and interpreting schematics and diagrams for hydraulic and electrical systems (AC/DC).

  • Perform periodic maintenance and major repairs as needed.

  • Excellent communication and customer service skills.

  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including weekends and emergency call-outs.

  • Ability to lift 50 pounds and work in various weather conditions.

  • Ability to work independently and travel extensively.

Pay Range: $30-$40 per hour
