City of Toledo Equipment Repair Technician in Toledo, Ohio

Under general supervision performs work of moderate difficulty in the maintenance and repair of various types of tools and equipment; orders replacement parts and maintains performance and inventory records; performs related work as required.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Maintains and repairs tools and equipment, such as chain saws, mowers, light tractors, chippers, steam cleaners, sand blasters, hydraulic jacks and lifts, drive systems, cylinders, valves, hoses, grinders, pumps, air tools, brake lathe and brake cleaning equipment, drill press, electronic balancing and diagnostic equipment, and a variety of other tools and equipment.

  • Troubleshoots and performs minor tune-ups, repairs ignition systems and adjusts carburetors and injection systems.

  • Replaces and repairs broken chains and hydraulic components.

  • Makes emergency service calls and repairs equipment on site, such as repairing minor electrical components, broken fuel lines, hoses, nozzles, pumps and replacing broken axles. 

  • Uses gas and electric cutting torches to expedite repairs.

  • Performs some minor welding.

  • Performs electrical work on equipment, such as replacing and repairing wiring, lights and switches.

  • Operates forklift as necessary.

  • Instructs new employees on the operation and care of equipment.

  • Orders parts in conjunction with repair operations, maintains tool inventory, safety equipment and related performance and inventory records; picks up and delivers materials and supplies.

  • Collects and distributes tools as necessary; may utilize electronic data device in recordkeeping tasks.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of:

  • Standard methods, materials, tools and equipment used in tool and equipment maintenance and repair; 

  • Occupational hazards and proper safety precautions of the work;

  • Basic welding techniques.

  • Basic electrical theory and systems.

  • Operating principles and mechanics of hydraulics.

  • Basic auto equipment repair.

Skill in:

  • Locating and repairing defects in various types of equipment.

  • The use of hand and machine tools used in the work. 

  • Maintaining accurate records and preparing reports.

  • Verbal communications.

REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND CERTIFICATIONS:

  • Graduation from high school or possession of General Educational Development (G.E.D.) equivalency, preferably supplemented by training in equipment repair.

  • Two (2) years of experience in the maintenance and repair of mechanical equipment.

  • Must possess a valid driver's license.
