Job Title: 2nd Shift CNC Machinist (Lead – Mazak 5-Axis)

Job Description

This role serves as the lead CNC machinist on 2nd shift, responsible for setting up, operating, and monitoring two large Mazak 5-axis machining centers to produce extremely large, high-precision parts. You will interpret CAD models and technical drawings, perform tool changes and offsets, verify part quality to tight tolerances, and help maintain a clean, efficient, and safe work area in a modern, air-conditioned shop.

Responsibilities

  • Lead CNC machining activities on 2nd shift, providing expertise and guidance on complex setups and operations.

  • Set up, operate, and monitor two Mazak 5-axis machines, specifically a Mazak Integrex e-1250V/8S and a Mazak Vortex e-1600V-10.

  • Machine extremely large parts with cycle times ranging from 2 hours to 3 days, ensuring consistent quality throughout long runs.

  • Interpret and work from CAD models, blueprints, and technical drawings to determine machining strategies and setups.

  • Perform tool changes, set and adjust tool offsets, and make in-process machining adjustments as needed to maintain part accuracy.

  • Use appropriate measuring tools and inspection techniques to verify that finished parts meet dimensional and quality requirements, including tight tolerances up to ±0.001 inch.

  • Monitor machine performance and cutting conditions, identifying and addressing issues to minimize downtime and scrap.

  • Collaborate with programming and engineering personnel regarding Mastercam programs, toolpaths, and process improvements.

  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area in accordance with shop standards.

  • Support continuous improvement efforts by suggesting enhancements to setups, tooling, and machining processes.

Essential Skills

  • At least 4 years of experience as a lead CNC operator or in CNC machining.

  • Proven experience setting up and operating CNC Mazak mills and related Mazak equipment.

  • Ability to make in-process machining adjustments at the control to maintain quality and dimensional accuracy.

  • Hands-on experience with CNC machine setup and operation, including tool changes and offsets.

  • Ability to interpret CAD models, blueprints, and technical drawings for machining operations.

  • Capability to work with tight tolerances up to ±0.001 inch.

  • Experience with Mazak controls and 5-axis machining operations.

  • Familiarity with Mastercam, CAM, or CAD systems used to generate or interpret toolpaths.

  • Strong CNC machining skills across milling and lathe operations.

  • Ability to maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Journeyman card in machining or a related trade (preferred).

  • Programming experience using Mastercam or similar CAM software for toolpath creation (preferred).

  • Experience creating, reviewing, or optimizing CNC toolpaths.

  • Experience in machining large, complex parts for automotive or similar industries.

  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail in high-precision machining environments.

  • Ability to work effectively as a lead on a multi-machine, multi-person shift.

Work Environment

The facility operates as a Tier 1 supplier, machining die cast components such as transmission and engine block parts for a diverse range of original equipment manufacturers, primarily in the automotive sector. This role is on 2nd shift (referred to as nights), with typical hours of 4:15 p.m. to 1:15 a.m., totaling approximately 45–50 hours Monday through Friday. Additional overtime is available on weekends, typically from noon to 6:00 p.m., on a voluntary basis. The shop is air-conditioned and maintained as an extremely clean, organized, and modern machining environment, equipped with advanced Mazak 5-axis machines and supported by Mastercam and CAD/CAM tools. The work involves handling very large parts with long cycle times, requiring focus, care, and adherence to safety and quality standards while working in standard industrial attire appropriate for a precision machining shop.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Toledo, OH.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $30.00 - $40.00/hr.
