Quality Engineer Expectations

Purpose

The purpose of this procedure is to define the minimum expectations of a Quality Engineer (QE) at the Ticonderoga Mill. These minimum expectations are intended to give the QE a rough framework of where their energies should be focused.

The Quality Engineers role is a hybrid between the Quality Admin, a Process Engineer, and a PPM. This role is for someone who is developing towards others roles within the department/mill.

Description

The expectations of a Ticonderoga Mill QE are summarized into the major categories stated in mill objectives. These include:

Quality Administrator Expectations

Safety

  • Fully participate in all mill-wide and departmental safety initiatives and programs.

  • Maintain a personal interest in all employees’ safety.

  • Equally willing to thank an employee for working safely, or stop an employee from committing an unsafe act.

  • Attend the millwide weekly management safety meeting.

  • Communicate safety information to the hourly workforce within the Quality Department.

  • Assist in 5S activities for the labs and seek opportunities to help in manufacturing departments.

Environmental

  • Understands the basic environmental compliance and safety requirements within the Quality Department.

  • Responsible for chemical compliance, labeling, disposal and ordering.

  • Responsible for SDS management of lab chemicals, including periodic chemical audits

People Development

  • Support the ongoing development of the hourly team members in the Quality Department including cross training.

  • Shadow all lab personnel, become knowledgeable of the testing procedures, and understand why each test is performed.

  • Complete lab tester audits to ensure procedures are being followed and tests are being completed properly.

  • Develop knowledge of the process area involved, especially as it relates to major quality concerns of their particular product line, through daily involvement, informal training and learning.

Operational Excellence

  • Responsible for collecting complaint information from SAP and entering it into the mill complaint database in a timely manner. Complete the initial investigation of the complaint issue; specifically the manufacturing data surrounding the product.

  • Include call reports into the complaint investigation packet when possible.

  • Coordinate complaint samples, product testing on customer complaint samples and include the results in the initial complaint investigation information.

  • Complete complaint packet for all complaints (mill, sales policy, zero dollar, etc.)

  • Support CTS and the Customer Satisfaction Center with investigating complaints and customer feedback and urgent quality issues.

  • Familiarize themselves with all of the equipment in the Paper Test Lab, Chem Lab, and Product Performance Lab to understand how to complete each test, understand what the test results means and what parameters are critical to each test to ensure accurate results. Also, understand how the results of each test can affect product performance.

  • Work with Chem Lab, Paper Test Lab and Product Performance Lab technicians to ensure reliable operation and routine maintenance of all lab equipment is current.

  • Develop TCCs and procedures for lab testing within the department.

  • Responsible for managing the Quality Department checkbook/credit card.

  • Write purchase requisitions in SAP and Coupa as needed.

  • Manage non-routine tasks as outlined on the Quality Matrix.

  • Support the operating departments where applicable with resolving quality issues.

  • Review automated COA reports every Monday and distribute COA data to the appropriate mailing list OR notify PPM if values are out of spec.

  • Add FLL and Machine Manager notes to the Process Change Database daily.

  • Everyone in the quality organization should work as a team to support and improve the productivity of the business unit. “Not my job” is not a part of any team member’s vocabulary.

  • Support the process of non-mill personnel being onsite; gate passes, tour passes, contractor qualification, etc.

  • Complete training (refresher training also) to become a contractor coordinator.

  • Manage equipment vendors to ensure their contractors’ safety and insurance information is current.

  • Organize customer visits + Corporate Audits

  • Help sales and commercial teams by sending our paper samples to customers, NATC, and our sample center

Communication

  • Maintain monthly complaint information on white board in Quality Department complex.

  • Periodically update their immediate supervisor on the status of projects and activities.

  • Will use & follow the MOC process when communicating changes to processes, testing, specifications, etc.

Quality Engineer Expectations

In addition to the above admin responsibilities, the Quality Engineer can/will take on the following responsibilities from the Product Performance Managers

  • Monthly Quality Scorecard

  • Support Internal Quality Audits and provide observations

  • Pure Pocket Profiles

  • Shade Standard management

  • Going to customers and leading customer visits (including corp audit)

Additionally, to develop Process Engineer skills, the QE will

  • get assigned projects that may or may not directly relate to quality.

  • They will also attend either the PS&D or Paper morning meetings depending on need.

  • Support Process Engineers in Audits (Sewer, Fiber, Conductivity)

  • Be assigned to a weekend duty

  • Work towards a Yellow Belt, and then a Green Belt

  • SDS approval of Product Development Chemicals
