Job Title: Field Service Engineer
Job Description
The Field Service Engineer installs, maintains, troubleshoots, and repairs CNC machines at customer sites, ensuring optimal machine performance and high levels of customer satisfaction. This advanced, customer-facing role requires deep technical expertise in CNC machinery, strong diagnostic skills across mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and software systems, and the ability to work independently while traveling frequently within an assigned territory.
Responsibilities
Install and commission CNC machines at customer sites, including mechanical setup, calibration, alignment, and integration with existing production systems.
Diagnose and resolve complex mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic, and software-related issues on CNC machines to restore full functionality.
Troubleshoot and repair automatic tool changers, pallet systems, ballscrews, and axis support bearings, including replacement and precise alignment.
Develop and implement preventive maintenance programs to improve machine reliability, reduce downtime, and extend equipment life.
Perform detailed inspections of CNC machinery and related automation systems to identify potential failures and recommend corrective actions.
Read and interpret electrical schematics, mechanical drawings, and control system documentation to support accurate troubleshooting and repairs.
Provide rapid response to emergency and urgent service calls, including on-site support for critical failures to minimize customer downtime.
Maintain accurate and detailed service logs, diagnostic reports, repair records, and maintenance documentation for each customer visit.
Communicate clearly with customers to explain findings, repair plans, preventive maintenance recommendations, and equipment status.
Provide feedback to engineering and product development teams regarding recurring issues, design improvements, and customer needs.
Ensure compliance with all safety protocols, procedures, and industry standards when working with high-precision CNC machinery and related systems.
Collaborate with internal teams and local colleagues to share knowledge, coordinate service activities, and support overall customer satisfaction.
Participate in training and continuous learning to stay current with CNC technology, control systems, and new product introductions.
Essential Skills
3+ years of experience in CNC machine operations with strong hands-on exposure to production environments.
3+ years of experience troubleshooting automatic tool changers and pallet systems on CNC machinery.
Proficiency in troubleshooting and repairing CNC machines, including mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic, and software-related issues.
Strong ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, mechanical systems documentation, and control system diagrams.
Solid understanding (8/10 level) of servo motors, drives, PLCs, and automation systems used in CNC equipment.
Hands-on experience with ballscrew and axis support bearing replacement and alignment.
Strong hydraulic and pneumatic troubleshooting and repair skills at an 8/10 competency level.
Experience working with CNC controls and field service activities at customer sites.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills to interact with customers and document service activities clearly and professionally.
Ability and willingness to travel frequently, including overnight stays, to support customers within the assigned territory.
Clean driving record to support regular travel to customer locations.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Experience in field service roles supporting industrial machinery or CNC equipment.
Experience working with PLCs, servo motors, and automation systems in a production or manufacturing environment.
Strong customer service mindset with the ability to build trust and maintain positive relationships with customer contacts.
Ability to work independently in the field, manage time effectively, and prioritize multiple service calls.
Comfort with providing feedback to engineering and product development teams to improve products and service offerings.
Willingness to participate in ongoing technical training and internal development opportunities.
Work Environment
This role is primarily field-based, with frequent travel to customer sites within a defined territory, including up to approximately 50% travel and occasional overnight stays. You will work on CNC machines and related automation systems in customer production environments, as well as in a clean office setting equipped with the necessary tools, diagnostic equipment, and technical resources. You will be part of a smaller, local team of around 30 people onsite, fostering a friendly, collaborative, and charismatic culture with opportunities for internal growth, customer-facing interaction, and ongoing training. A clean driving record is required due to the travel-intensive nature of the position.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Tempe, AZ.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $29.00 - $40.00/hr.
