Job Description
The Project Engineer supports the project manager and project team with project documentation and control, job cost accounting, scheduling, and construction supervision activities. This role requires a hands-on professional who comfortably manages multiple tasks, adapts to changing priorities, and helps ensure that complex construction projects are delivered on time, within scope, and within budget. The position focuses heavily on piping and equipment installation work within a large campus expansion project.
Responsibilities
Assist the project manager and project team with day-to-day project documentation, control, and coordination.
Perform detailed material takeoffs to support accurate estimating, purchasing, and cost tracking.
Prepare, submit, and track change orders, ensuring all scope changes are documented and properly approved.
Manage submittals, including preparation, review coordination, tracking, and logging for timely approval.
Track time and material tickets and ensure accurate documentation for billing and cost control.
Order project materials, obtain and compare vendor quotes, and track deliveries to align with the project schedule.
Enter and maintain material orders in logs to monitor costs and support job cost accounting.
Support project scheduling activities and help maintain and update the project schedule as work progresses.
Coordinate daily and weekly activities with the foreman to align field operations with project plans.
Track submittals, requests for information (RFIs), and change orders to ensure timely responses and resolution.
Attend job meetings to represent the project team, document action items, and follow up on commitments.
Participate in BIM coordination meetings to support clash detection and coordination of piping and equipment installation.
Assist with on-site project management to help ensure safety, quality, and productivity goals are met.
Monitor project progress against the plan and help drive actions to keep work on track with anticipated deadlines.
Manage the RFI process, including preparation, submission, tracking, and documentation of responses.
Oversee the submittal process from creation through approval, ensuring compliance with project specifications.
Process owner billings and support project-related accounting activities, including reviewing costs and supporting documentation.
Collaborate with construction management and field teams to support best practices, performance standards, and regulatory compliance.
Provide general project coordination and administrative support, including document control, reporting, and communication with stakeholders.
Essential Skills
1–5 years of experience as a project coordinator, project engineer, or project manager in a construction-related environment.
Strong proficiency in AutoCAD for reviewing and working with project drawings.
Strong proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel, Word, and Outlook, for reporting, documentation, and communication.
Proficiency with Procore for construction project management and document control.
Proficiency with Bluebeam for drawing review, markups, and coordination.
Familiarity with construction rules, regulations, best practices, and performance standards.
Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously and prioritize work effectively to meet deadlines.
Strong organizational skills with attention to detail in documentation, logs, and cost tracking.
Effective verbal and written communication skills for coordinating with project managers, foremen, vendors, and other stakeholders.
Foundational knowledge of project management and construction management principles.
Ability to support material takeoffs, change order management, and job cost accounting.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
2–5 years of relevant project engineering or coordination experience is preferred; candidates with 1–3 years of experience will also be considered.
Experience in project management and construction management on piping and equipment installation projects.
Experience with document control processes and systems in a construction environment.
Experience with change order preparation, tracking, and negotiation support.
Experience with material takeoffs and cost tracking for construction projects.
Exposure to piping design or mechanical systems is beneficial.
Experience using Revit for 3D coordination and BIM is a plus.
OSHA 30 certification is preferred; support may be available to obtain this certification.
Educational background in Mechanical Engineering or Construction Management is preferred but not required.
Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced project environment and adapt to evolving project needs.
Work Environment
This role is based on a large campus expansion project in Tarrytown, NY, focused on piping and equipment installation. You work primarily Monday through Friday from approximately 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., supporting both office and field operations. The environment is a mix of on-site construction activity and office-based coordination, requiring regular interaction with foremen, field crews, vendors, and the broader project team. You use tools such as Procore, Bluebeam, AutoCAD, and potentially Revit for project management, coordination, and drawing review. The position involves working around active construction, so adherence to safety standards and use of appropriate personal protective equipment is expected. Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $65000.00 - $85000.00/hr.
